Prince George Dems – Nov 1 Potluck:

A potluck supper is planned for the Prince George Dems regular meeting on November 1 (yes, October is escaping us.) All members of the PG Dems, all friends of the Dems, and all of our Democratic volunteers at the precincts on election day are invited to come, grab a plate and join in the discourse. It would be helpful if you could bring a main dish casserole or a veggie side dish, but if that is not possible don’t sweat it. Just come. We are a community.

The Dems meet in the Prince George Human Services Building at 6450 Administration Drive in the government complex and the meeting begins at 6 pm.

How we describe October — canvassing, phone-banking, organizing precinct volunteers, training volunteers, attending campaign events, organizing a booth at the Pecan Festival, and dealing with all of the weather –Florence, Michael, and the Nor’easter which took out the Pecan Festival.

Then there are the tragic, horrible acts of violence … the spate of bombs sent to Democratic officials, leaders, and those publically critical of the man in the White House and the shooting up of a synagogue in Pittsburgh, acts of violence really predictable in this climate of hate speech from the administration and its supporters.

We can prepare for the weather and do what it takes to protect our safety.  We can also deal with the climate of hate, racism, and violence by sweeping the sycophants of the president out of the House and Senate.  We can do this! But we can only do this if each and every one of us votes and gets others to the polls to vote, or volunteer at the polls to help those less aware of the candidates find the Democratic candidates on the ballot.

In Prince George, we already have a superior Senator, Tim Kaine, and a similarly ethical, and caring Congressman, A. Donald McEachin.  Other Virginia Congressional and Senate Districts will have the opportunity to elect Democratic candidates to replace the GOP henchmen & women.

So, don’t forget to vote on Tuesday, November 6th. If you become aware that you will Susan B Anthony tombstone (2)have work, travel, health, or caretaking duties that day that might interfere with your being able to vote on the 6th, go to the Registrar’s Office on the 2nd Floor South of the County administration building, and vote absentee in-person.

Absentee voting in Virginia and early voting in other dates is already very, very high. Let’s join the Democratic voting herd.

Blue Commonwealth Gala!

Democrats, mark June 16, 2018, on your calendars.  June 16th is the date of the next Central Committee Meeting and the Blue Commonwealth Gala that evening. The Democratic Party of Virginia decided to rename what had long been known as the J-J (Jefferson-Jackson) Dinner to be more forward, rather than backward-looking.  Both having been slave owners, did not help the case for keeping the J-J name.    More details will be shared when available.

This change was announced at the Quarter 1 Central Committee Meeting on March 3rd. in Richmond.  Senators Tim Kaine and Mark Warner spoke as did the Attorney General Mark Herring.  All three updated the body on their legislative or legal efforts to address gun violence, national security, reproductive rights, human rights vis a vis immigration and DACA issues, and efforts to hold the administration accountable at both the federal and state levels.

Senator Tim Kaine

Above Senator Mark Warner, with his hand on the shoulder of the State Party Chair, Susan Swecker, has just urged her to run for President of the United States in 2020.  Attorney Mark Herring above right and Senator Tim Kaine lower left.

The 4th Congressional District Committee met prior to the Central Committee Meeting.  Petitions for Congressman Donald McEachin were notarized by members Lori Johnson Krenik and George Morrison and collected. Two replacement members of the 4th were elected … Willene Johnson of Dinwiddie and Jaime Areizaga-Soto of Richmond.  Delegate Lashrecse Aird is the Chair of the 4th CD Committee. Seated with Delegate Aird is Willene Johnson.  Tyrone Williams (L) and Tavarris Spinks, Chair of the Virginia Young Democrats, are members of the 4th CD.

Think about attending the next CD/Central Committee meetings.

Challenges for rural campaigns:

Sheila Bynum-Coleman

Sheila-Bynum Coleman

Sheila Bynum-Coleman, the Democratic candidate for the 62nd Virginia House District, shared some of the strategies she is learning from the Rural Caucus of the Democratic Party of Virginia (DPVA) and other organizations, about how to campaign effectively in rural or exurban districts.  Needless to say, religious communities can play a major role in this effort, directly or indirectly, congregations are fertile sources of voters and campaign volunteers.  How best to reach them?  Providing literature and speaking when allowed are terribly important musts for a campaign.

Rebecca S. Colaw, the Suffolk lawyer who is the Democratic candidate for the 64th Virginia House District, was on her way to the meeting when she was stalled by a massive traffic jam in a more populous area of the district.  The 64th covers about 80% of Prince George County in terms of territory and voters.  We tend to forget about the 64th because the current Republican incumbent did not make himself available to Democratic constituents.  Though we are on the northern fringe of the 64th, Prince George represents the second largest voting locality in the 64th.  Rebecca reported by phone that she and volunteers are planning on knocking on Prince George doors in late July.  She is also using Facebook extensively and asks that we like her page and share it with our friends and other pages.

At this point, Delegate Lashrecse Aird  (63rd Virginia House District) is unopposed, but she still needs the support of those in her district to continue her work on behalf of our Tri-Cities area.  She and Delegate Price (95th) are hosting a webinar on July 12th at 6:30 pm to discuss new laws which went into effect on July 1.  You must rsvp to attend the webinar at www.tinyurl.com/AirdPriceWebinar.

Also in attendance were Floyd Brown, Jr. (“FJ”), candidate for District 1 Board of Supervisors, and Leila Holmes, Candidate for District 2, Prince George School Board.

Remember that all of our candidates need our support … donations, knocking on doors, sharing Facebook messages, texting, and or calling others on their behalf.

Carol Woodward is available to answer any questions about the recent meeting of the 4th Congressional District Committee on June 17.  It was a great first meeting of the reorganized 4th CDC.  We had a great time and were entirely inspired by Lieutenant Governor Ralph Northam, his recent primary opponent Tom Perriello, Senator Mark Warner, and our own 4th CD Congressman, Donald McEachin.

Some upcoming events to get on our calendar:

August 4 & 5 – Community event at Union Branch Baptist Church, Prince George

August 19 – Community Day in Hopewell

August 24 – Back to School Fair, Scott Park, Prince George

We may be able to have a booth at each of these events to register voters, sell our candles, and assist our candidates.

Dems meeting Thursday, April 6 at 6 pm

Join in the updates and lively discussions at our monthly meeting.  Invite others to come and participate.  In the current landscape, there are so many things to talk about … but business first.

We have a 4th Congressional District Convention on May 20 and prior to the Convention, we will have a Committee Caucus to elect our 7 delegates to that convention.  Carol Woodward plans to run for reelection to the 4th CD Committee.

There is the Democratic Primary on June 13 for the Virginia House of Delegate Seats, for the Governor’s race and for the Lieutenant Governor’s Race.

In Prince George,  we will also have elections for two Board of Supervisor and two School Board Seats.

In addition to elections, there are also a number of Resist groups and other grassroots opportunities to join in with others to take an active role in combating the craziness coming out of Washington.

So turn out on Thursday evening at 6 pm at the Prince George Human Services Building, 6450 Administration Drive in the 1st Floor Community Meeting Room for the meeting. The Building is building #12 in the Prince George Government Complex.

McEachin town hall draws crowd of supporters – News – The Progress-Index – Petersburg, VA

The Progress-Index scooped this article.  The Richmond Times-Dispatch did not cover the event.  At least, there was no article in today’s RTD about Congressman McEachin’s town hall at Demolition Coffee.

A number of Prince George Dems were there … Cynthia Mitchell, Carroll Briggs, Tammie Miller-Jennings, Robert Woodward, Carol Woodward, and probably others that were obscured by the standing room only crowd.

The usual issues were raised; immigration reform, healthcare, environmental protection, and issues important to locality leaders as well.

He urged folks to take all methods available to present their positions to their congressional leaders.  Phone calls to legislators are particularly effective, even if you own legislator already supports your position and even if the particular legislator is not your representative.  In essence, he said that now all issues are up to the boss and we (voters, citizens) are the boss.

His second most critical remark (to this observer) was that protection of the environment was the number one issue of the 21st century because without the Earth, nothing else matters.

Clinton/Kaine, Donald McEachin, Prince George Thursday PhoneBank

Breaking news from the PG Dems

HillarymemeTonight we begin our extended hours of phone banking on Thursday nights.  We’ll phone bank from 5:30 to 8:30 pm.  Just grab a sammie on your way home from work and bring it, your phone, yourself to 6450 Administration Drive (Prince George Human Services Building) 1st Floor Community Meeting Room.

No time to grab a sandwich?  We’ll have some snacks there and water.  But feel free to bring your own refreshments or some you’d like to share.  Know anyone who might donate some sandwiches, brownies, or cookies for us?  If not tonight then on one of our future Thursday night phone banks?  We phone bank every Thursday night until Election Day, November 8th.

Some suggestions:

Earbuds/headphones –It is much easier to call on your cell phone if you have Sen McEachin 1 (2)earbuds/earphones so you can escape holding the phone to your ear for extended periods

Fear of call backs on your phone — don’t be. Explain you were calling to encourage support for Democrats.  The caller will be friendly or not, just say thanks for following up and hang up

Fear of not knowing what to say — it might be stiff at first, but you’ll get a briefing in the beginning about our goals for the evening. After two or three calls it will be old hat.  You are a grown up. You know how to talk on the phone.

veepIf you heard Trump in the Town Hall last night then you know we cannot allow this man to come close to the White House.  You can help keep him in his New Your penthouse with the gold plated faucets or in his reality TV offices.  Are you IN?

Want more info –call or text  Carol 804-691-8486 or email at woodwardcd@aol.com

May the force be with you … with us.
