Mateo Gasparotto (ACLU) speaking:

Mr. Gasparotto, Investigator with the ACLU of Virginia, will dicuss the issue of voting rights for incarcerated non-felons at our meeting on March 7. His approach may focus on the legal path, consisting of finding a plaintiff with standing, possibly identifying data to demonstrate the scope of the problem, and pursuing a legal suit.

The Committee has been exploring the voting needs of incarcerated individuals who are either serving sentences for misdemeanors or are incarcerated while awaiting trial. Their information about and access to absentee voting is impaired just by the fact of incarceration, but these are persons who otherwise are eligible to vote, don’t have access to the absentee ballot.

The Committee will have Senator Rosalyn Dance (VA Senate District 16) speaking at our April 4th meeting, pehaps joined by Delegate Lashrecse Aird (VA House District 63), to discuss not only the 2019 General Assembly Session, but also some legislative approaches that might assist in getting better absentee voting rights for non-felons faster than can be accomplished through the court process. Tammie Miller Jennings and others have already been exploring this topic with General Assembly members.

While we don’t know the numerical scope, we know it is likely a statewide issue.

Plan on joining the discussion on Thursday night at 6 pm at the Prince George Human Services Building, 6450 Admnistration Drive, Prince George Government Complex.

August 30 Special Session, General Assembly, Governor Ralph Northam, OneVirginia2021, Redistricting, Special Session

August 30 – Special Session of the General Assembly:

Governor Northam has ordered a special session on August 30. The purpose for this session is to redraw certain districts created by the Republicans in 2011 to protect red districts by creating minority majority districts.  The court declared those districts unconstitutional and ordered redrawn districts by October 30, 2018 to be in effect in the 2019 elections.

The Election Results in 2019 are critical for Democrats:

All Virginia House of Delegates and Senate seats will be up for election in 2019. The Virginia legislators elected in 2019 will be the legislators who control Census redistricting in 2021. If the Republicans remain in the majority in the General Assembly, they will continue in their efforts to redraw districts that will dilute and restrict the votes of Democrats, progressives, independents, minorities, women, anyone they view as the enemies of their ultra-conservative agenda.

Visit www.onevirginia2021.org which has been advocating for bipartisan redistricting in Virginia.  It has a free Advocacy training on September 15, 2018 in Alexandria, Virginia.  It is a free training, but One Virginia 2021 is a nonprofit and would appreciate a donation, whether you plan to attend the training or not.  You can register for the training HERE.

62nd VA House District, 8th VA House District, Greg Habeeb, PG DEMS meet August 2, Richmond Times-Dispatch, Riley Ingram, Sheila Bynum-Coleman

8th VA House District to have a special election:

According to the Richmond Times-Dispatch, Saturday, July 28th, “Republican Habeeb to leave Va. House” (A2),  on August 31st.  This will necessitate a special election. The 62nd Virginia House District is a hugely red district which includes Salem, Craig County, and parts of Roanoke and Montgomery counties. Yes, it would be a tough haul for a Democratic candidate, but we all know that thanks to the current resident of the White House, there are cracks opening up in many solid red districts.

Riley Ingram to not run for re-election?

The last paragraph of the same article noted that Riley Ingram had indicated to the RTD

cropped-sheila-bynum-coleman-in-hopewell.jpg

Sheila Bynum-Coleman

that he will not run for re-election in 2019. Sheila Bynum-Coleman took well over 40% of the vote in her last run against Riley. Has anyone talked with her? Is she planning on running a third time?  The third time is a charm and it is time for the 62nd Virginia House District to vote blue!

Prince George Dems meet next on Thursday, August 2.

Looks like we’ll have lots to talk about. We meet at the Prince George Human Service Building, 6450 Administration Drive, 1st Floor meeting room, Prince George Government Complex at 6 p.m.

Women candidates

Just realized that we have a number of women candidates in the general election this fall.

For the House of Delegate seats, Sheila Bynum Coleman (62nd) Lashrecse Aird (63rd), and Rebecca Colaw (64th) are all Democratic candidates for election or re-election to those seats. !!!  The Republican candidate for the 64th is also a woman.  I guess fairly soon we’ll have to tell our sons and grandsons, that, yes, they too can run for the Virginia House of Delegates.

In other races,  Leila Holmes is running for the Prince George School Board from District 2 and on the 13th Marlene Waymack was circulating her petition to file for the Board of Supervisors from District 2.

More later.

2017 Democratic Primary, Justin Fairfax, Lashrecse Aird, politics, Ralph Northam, Rebecca Colaw

Congratulations to all of the candidates

Every Democrat who offered himself or herself as a candidate for the Democratic nomination is due respect from all of us.  We have no anointed or hereditary leaders. Diverse views and experience is what will continue to massage our party’s message and keep our efforts in tune with the needs of our citizens.

Congratulations to the statewide and local primary winners.

Ralph Northam and Justin Fairfax are our nominees for Governor and Lieutenant Governor, respectively.  Mark Herring, our Attorney General, did not have a challenger in the primary.

As to the Virginia House District races affecting Prince George:

In the 62nd Sheila Bynum-Coleman was ultimately unchallenged.  She will be facing long-term Republican incumbent, Riley Ingram, in November.

The 63rd Virginia House District was handily captured by our current delegate in that district, Lashrecse Aird.  Her victory was decisive.

After Primary Victory

In the 64th, with three Democratic candidates, Rebecca S. Colaw, won the Democratic nomination.  Here race in November will be against another woman, Republican Emily Brewer.

Congratulations and thank you to our poll workers

Many voters had questions, particularly in the race for Lieutenant Governor, because that race had not received the attention of the Governor’s primary.   Many voters wanted the opinions of those of us who are actively engaged in the political process and knowledgeable about the qualifications and positions of the candidates.  Poll workers, you made a difference.  Thank you!
