Women candidates

Just realized that we have a number of women candidates in the general election this fall.

For the House of Delegate seats, Sheila Bynum Coleman (62nd) Lashrecse Aird (63rd), and Rebecca Colaw (64th) are all Democratic candidates for election or re-election to those seats. !!!  The Republican candidate for the 64th is also a woman.  I guess fairly soon we’ll have to tell our sons and grandsons, that, yes, they too can run for the Virginia House of Delegates.

In other races,  Leila Holmes is running for the Prince George School Board from District 2 and on the 13th Marlene Waymack was circulating her petition to file for the Board of Supervisors from District 2.

More later.

Total of 12 running for Prince George District 1 and 2 supervisor seats – News – The Progress-Index – Petersburg, VA.

This is a fairly comprehensive article from Amir Vera of the Progress-Index, but there are a few things to point out …

Melvin C. Jones has stated to many that he did not foreclose running for reelection this fall as a quid pro quo for the interim appointment to the District 2 vacant seat.  For your information, though Melvin is running as an Independent, he is a member of the Prince George Dems.

Proudly, there are two Democratic candidates running in District 1 against the two Independent incumbents.  B. Renee Taylor Garnett and Floyd M. Brown, Jr. are members of our Democratic Committee and are excellently qualified for the two District 1 seats.

There is another Independent candidate running in District 1 … Engo H. Radant.  Can anyone share information about this candidate?

As you meet or interact with the candidates for the Board of Supervisors in your district ask them point blank if they support single member voting districts, rather than the at-large district system we now have.

City Attorney, Hopewell, Prince George, Residency Requirements for Employees

Dear Prince George Democrats & Friends:

Should a locality require certain or all employees  to reside within the locality?  This issue is arising again in Hopewell as the Hopewell City Council seeks to fill the City Attorney position question.  The question relates to other city positions as well.

The Prince George Democrat is not clear on the policy in other area localities, but is particularly interested in the Prince George policy on this question.

Read the article and then answer the question by submitting a comment to this article on the question.

Politics is alive and well in Prince George County

Democratic candidates and candidates for nomination headlined the Agenda of the PG Dems on April 2nd in the 1st Floor Community Room of the Human Services Building.

Sheila Bynum-Coleman, candidate for the 62nd Virginia House District, spoke about the precinct by precinct analysis her campaign and the Chesterfield Democratic Committee has done which indicates that the 62nd is definitely winnable.  Riley Ingram, the Republican incumbent has held the seat for two decades and Democrats know it is time for a change. At this point Bynum-Coleman does not have a challenger in the Democratic Primary. Below Bynum-Coleman (r) speaks with Sharon Goertz, Prince George Dem and Electoral Board member.

Three of the contenders for the 63rd Virginia House District in the June 9 Democratic Primary also spoke.  Gerry Rawlinson, Lashrecse Aird, and Atiba Muse briefly focused on their backgrounds and how their experience qualified them for this post.  Rawlinson has a background in nursing and as a business owner, Aird has experience as a political committee leader, legislative aide to then Delegate Rosalyn Dance and her gubernatorial appointments to state commissions by Governor McAuliffe, and  Muse cited his constituent and legislative assistant experience with Congressman Bobby Scott and his experience as an elected School Board member as unique qualifiers for the position as a state Delegate. The Democratic incumbent, Joe Preston, is a candidate for the Democratic Nomination for the 16th Virginia Senate District.

Board to take up tabled action regarding appointment of District 2 Interim Supervisor:

Prince George County Virginia SealNone of the three nominees received three votes at the March 3rd consideration of appointment to fill the District 2 vacancy on an interim basis.  The March 4th post outlines the nominees and votes.

It is possible that during the intervening week as one Supervisor or another has attempted to persuade one of the other Supervisors to support his candidate, efforts may have been made to search out a compromise candidate from the nine other interested citizens.

One source has indicated that the 9 remaining contenders are not out of the running.

Plan to attend the budget session on March 9 (Monday) at 6 p.m. at the BOS meeting room.  Watch democracy in action.
