16th VASEN, 62nd HOD, June 11 Democratic Primaries

Only 2 Dem Primaries in Prince George:

There are two Democratic Primaries in Prince George. Senator Rosalyn R. Dance is being challenged by Joe Morrissey in the 16th Virginia Senate District (16th VASEN.) In the 62nd Virginia House District (62nd HOD) in which there is no incumbent (Riley Ingram is retiring), Tavorise Marks and Lindsey Dougherty are vying for the Democratic nomination.

Not sure if you are covered by these districts? If your normal voting precinct is one of the following you are in one or both of the Democratic Primaries:

Union Branch Precinct (Union Branch Baptist Church) 3356 Union Branch Road, 16th VASEN

Rives Precinct (Walton School) 4101 Courthouse Road 16th VASEN

Courts Precinct (Courthouse) 6601 Courts Drive 16th VASEN

Jefferson Park Precinct (Faith Baptist Church) 5501 Middle Road 16h VASEN (partial) , 62nd HOD

You vote in your normal voting place if in one of these precincts. You may vote in-person absentee through June 8th (Saturday) at the General Registrar’s office, 2nd Floor South Wing of the County Administration Building or on Primary Day (June 11) from 6 am until 7pm at your regular voting place.

Need more help?

The Prince George Democrats are meeting Thursday night at 6 pm at the Prince George Human Services Building, 6450 Administration Drive, Prince George Government Complex. You can get all of your questions answered there.

Entrance to 6450 Administration Dr., Prince George VA … Human Services Building

We understand that Lindsey Dougherty (62nd HOD candidate for nomination) and Michele Joyce (Democratic nominee for the 64th HOD) have asked to speak as has Virginia Smith, Democratic nominee for the 15th VASEN.

Just so you know.

In Democratic primaries the Prince George Democratic Committee must remain neutral, however any member of the Committee may support and advocate (politely, please) for the candidate of his or her choice. All candidates will be asking supporters for their votes, their time, and their donations. Question is … are you an investor or a window shopper.

Mateo Gasparotto (ACLU) speaking:

Mr. Gasparotto, Investigator with the ACLU of Virginia, will dicuss the issue of voting rights for incarcerated non-felons at our meeting on March 7. His approach may focus on the legal path, consisting of finding a plaintiff with standing, possibly identifying data to demonstrate the scope of the problem, and pursuing a legal suit.

The Committee has been exploring the voting needs of incarcerated individuals who are either serving sentences for misdemeanors or are incarcerated while awaiting trial. Their information about and access to absentee voting is impaired just by the fact of incarceration, but these are persons who otherwise are eligible to vote, don’t have access to the absentee ballot.

The Committee will have Senator Rosalyn Dance (VA Senate District 16) speaking at our April 4th meeting, pehaps joined by Delegate Lashrecse Aird (VA House District 63), to discuss not only the 2019 General Assembly Session, but also some legislative approaches that might assist in getting better absentee voting rights for non-felons faster than can be accomplished through the court process. Tammie Miller Jennings and others have already been exploring this topic with General Assembly members.

While we don’t know the numerical scope, we know it is likely a statewide issue.

Plan on joining the discussion on Thursday night at 6 pm at the Prince George Human Services Building, 6450 Admnistration Drive, Prince George Government Complex.

Three Board of Supervisor seats will be on the ballot in 2019. The incumbent in District 1, Alan Carmichael, and the incumbents in District 2, Donald Hunter and TJ Webb, are up for reelection should they decide to run.

The previous version listed Marlene Waymack, rather than, TJ Webb being up for re-election Thanks to Supervisor FJ Brown for that correction.

School Board Seats

Bobby Cox’s seat is up for election in 2019 in District 1 as are the seats in District 2 currently held by Kevin Foster and Louis Stevenson.

Constitutional Officers

All of the Constitutional Officer seats except for the Clerk of the Court are up for election.

2018, Congressman McEachin, Election, Precincts, Senator Kaine

Our Prince George Congressional leaders are re-elected!!

We are so proud of Senator Tim Kaine and Congressman A. Donald McEachin! We are also proud of all of our precinct captains and volunteers who made an effort to battle downpours and winds to provide information and guidance to voters on election day. When we get their permissions we will include their names in an upcoming article.

withSenatorKaine Carroll Briggs & Tim Kaine

Senator McClellan Delegate Aird Congressman McEachin

Senator Jennifer McClellan L, Delegate Lashrecse Aird, Congressman McEachin

Senator Kane & Congressman McEachin did not carry Prince George County!

What does this mean?  It means we have work to do to advance Democratic principles and leaders in Prince George. We need to be more outgoing and engage in outreach to advance the core principles of the Democratic Party.

We must educate, educate, educate. We must advocate, advocate, advocate, and as Frederick Douglas said, we must “agitate, agitate, agitate.”

But for the moment, let’s celebrate.

Democrats took the House of Delegates, adding three new Congresswomen from Virginia. Our congressional delegation now has a majority of Democrats.

We had someone, for at least part of the day, at every precinct in Prince George County.

Lillian Boyd & Denya Hankerson

Lillian standing (L)  & Denya standing

We have two superior members on the Prince George County Board of Elections, Dr. Lillian King Boyd, and Denya Hankerson.  They are nonpartisan in performing their duties, but they keep us well informed and they help ensure an impartial election.

Let’s celebrate, rest, recalibrate, and strategize for the extremely important 2019 election year.

Regular PG Dems Meeting:

Roughly 40 Democrats attended the monthly business meeting of the Prince George committeeatwork3Dems on March 1st.  The theme of the evening was “Volunteerism, Involvement, and Activism” (VIA).  Internally the PG Dems will be working on subcommittee structure, fundraising, and helping our members connect with companion groups to follow specific interests. Externally, we will be building our profile, reaching out and engaging with a number of community groups.

Carroll Briggs, the Committee Chair, asked each executive committee member to share their plans to perform in their officer roles and to describe their efforts in special duties under their purview.

Tammie Miller Jennings (L), Juanita Thorne, Pete Washington, Carroll Briggs-Chair

Committee Building:

Pete Washington, Vice Chair, has an especial interest in attracting new Committee members, particularly younger members.  He asked each member to invite a possible new member to the April meeting (5th).

“VIA”: Volunteerism, Involvement, Activism

committeeatwork (2)Tammie Miller Jennings, the Secretary, recommended that we develop some survey or method to determine particular political or volunteer interests of our members so we can help connect them with other groups in the greater Central Virginia area so that our network grows beyond the Committee.  One aspect of involvement is to also understand what Committee roles or subcommittees that appeal to individual members.  Everyone needs to be involved and recognized.  It was specifically discussed to have a hospitality subcommittee and a membership committee.  Tammie is at right in the red & white stripes.

Fundraising:

Our Treasurer, Juanita Thorne, emphasized the need for the Committee to engage in fundraising.  She considers the members of the Executive Committee as de facto members of the fundraising committee, but she circulated a signup sheet for other members of the committee to volunteer in the fundraising effort.

Chair’s Comments:

Chairman Carroll Briggs, urged every person present to consider their interests and share them with any member of the Executive Committee, to bring a guest to every meeting.  He thanked Lillian Boyd and Pete Washington for refreshments and also thanked Juanita Thorne and Pete Washington for the door prizes.

BOS Update:

FJ Brown, District 1 Board of Supervisor Member, advised that the March 7 County Budget Work Session would be devoted to the School portion of the budget.  He also advised that the March 14th Budget Work Session had been canceled, but that a new date would be set on March 7.

4th Congressional District Committee Update:

Carol Woodward updated the Committee on the activities of the 4th Congressional District Committee and the Central Committee, both a part of the Democratic Party of Virginia.  Delegate Lashrecse Aird (63rd Virginia House District) is the Chair of the 4th CD Committee and Carol is the Secretary.

See everyone on April 5th!

Attorney General, Delegate Lashrecse Aird, Floyd Brown Jr, Governor, Justin Fairfax, Leila Holmes, Lieutenant Governor, Mark Herring, Ralph Northam, Rebecca S. Colaw, Registration Deadline 10-16, Sheila Bynum-Coleman

As a Democratic Party member and advocate, it is our duty to educate ourselves and others about issues and candidates.  Other than voting, this is our primary responsibility.  If we don’t accept the responsibility to do this, then we should not blame others for our ignorance.

The election is in 30 days!

Today, October 8th, marks the one-month milestone before citizens go to the polls on November 7th.  Before then …

October 16th is the deadline to register to vote in the November 7th election.  Already registered? Double check your registration for correctness at your county registrar’s office or by going online at www.elections.virginia.gov.  This is especially important if you have moved or had a name change since the last election.  The Prince George County Registrar’s office is on the Second Floor, South Wing, of the County Administration Building.

October 21, 5:00 pm is the deadline to request an absentee ballot to be mailed to you. A request by mail must be received by 5 pm that day.

November 4, 5:00 pm is the last day to vote absentee in person.

The election in Prince George:

The Democratic nominees for the statewide offices are:

Governor:  Ralph Northam, currently the Lieutenant Governor.  He is a physician and Gulf War veteran.  Ralph is a native Virginian, having been born and raised on the Eastern Shore.

Lieutenant Governor:  Justin Fairfax, is a lawyer, former prosecuting attorney, and now a Justin Fairfax speaking in Hopewelldefense attorney in Northern Virginia.  This young man and his three siblings were raised by a single mother.  All four went to college and two went to law school.  Justin’s law degree is from Columbia University where he was on the Law Review.

Attorney General:  Mark Herring is currently the Attorney General.  He has fought for women’s reproductive health rights, expansion of Medicaid, challenged the Trump Immigrant Travel Ban, and many other efforts to protect the rights of Virginia citizens.

Virginia House Districts in Prince George:

62nd: Sheila Bynum-Coleman is challenging Riley Ingram, who has held the seat for Sheila Bynum-Coleman in Hopewellalmost 3 decades.  She garnered about 40% of the vote in the last race and has continued her quest to become the Delegate from the 62nd because she is someone who will listen to and fight for the right of citizens.

63rd: Delegate Lashrecse Aird is the incumbent and is unopposed Delegate Lashrecse Aird in Hopewellin this election.  She faced a challenge in the primary and had the opportunity to speak to citizens in the 63rd and throughout our area. She continues to be active in reaching out to citizens and organizations throughout the 63rd and the Crater area.

Rebecca Colaw64th:  Rebecca S. Colaw is the Democratic nominee for this seat which has no incumbent.  Rebecca is a Gulf War Air Force veteran herself and is currently an attorney in Suffolk.  She is very interested in workforce development and the expansion of broadband throughout the 63rd.  Being a horsewoman she is also particularly interested in the agricultural challenges in the district.

Democrats in the local Prince George Races:

FJ in Rotary ShirtBoard of Supervisors, District 1:  Floyd Brown, Jr. is the candidate in this district.  He is uniquely qualified having been born and raised in the district.  “FJ” is a business owner and IT professional and understands the challenges to our Prince George,  as both a rural community, as well as a close neighbor to the urban development to the northwest of Prince George.  F.J is the Treasurer of the Prince George Democratic Committee.

Leila HolmesSchool Board, District 2:  Leila Holmes, a member of the Prince George Democratic Committee, is the candidate for this seat.  She has been an active parent and citizen volunteer in the school system and has made it a practice to attend and comment at the school board meetings.  She will advocate for transparency and fairness in our schools and will advocate for the best educational opportunities for all of our students.

All of the candidates have web pages and most have presences on Facebook and Twitter.  The easiest way to find their presence online is simply to google a name and go from there.

Early this week we will load the sample ballots for each Prince George Precinct on the Documents page and we will continue to update the events page.  If you learn of a political event we should publish, please share that information with Carol Woodward.

It’s time to get the buzz on …

Enough excuses already!  Sure you have all said

  1. I’m tired of politics
  2. I don’t like politics
  3. It is summer
  4. It is summer
  5. It is summer
  6. Wait til after Labor Day
  7. My vote doesn’t count
  8. There is nothing I can do
  9. I have to wash my hair
  10. All of the above

Every election matters …

From dog catcher to Presidential every elected official in some way affects the everyday lives of everyday people.

This year we are electing the Governor (Ralph Northam), Lieutenant Governor (Justin Fairfax) and Attorney General (Mark Herring) … all in statewide races.

Every House of Delegate (HOD) member is up for election.  In Prince George we have

Senator McClellan Delegate Aird Congressman McEachin
After Primary Victory
delegate-aird-3-may-2016

three HOD districts:  The 62nd has the Democratic nominee Sheila Bynum-Coleman challenging a 30+ year Republican incumbent.  In the 63rd Democratic incumbent, Lashrecse Aird, is unopposed, but she still needs to hear from her constituents and needs their support.  The Democratic Nominee for the 64th HOD district is Rebecca S. Colaw, a 20 year Air Force Veteran who deployed in wartime and now a practicing attorney and horsewoman.  Rebecca is running against a Republican newcomer who owns a wine shop. There is no incumbent.   It is clear from the demographics that both Shelia and Rebecca can handily win their districts … if we do our part!

We also have a number of local elections for the staggered terms in District 1 & 2 for the

Leila Holmes

Leila Holmes

School Board and the Board of Supervisors.  Two of our Committee members are running for local seats … Floyd Brown, Jr. is running for the Board of Supervisors in District 1 and Leila Holmes is running for the District 2 School Board Seat.  We also have a special election for the County Treasurer, a Constitutional Officer position.  This is to fill the unexpired term of the retiring Treasurer, Jean Barker.

But wait!  There’s more …

The Prince George Democratic Democratic Committee hosts a Phone Bank every Tuesday night from 5 pm to 8 pm in the Prince George Human Services Building, Community Room, 6450 Administration Drive.  This Phone Bank supports the Coordinated Campaign including the HOD campaigns.  Come on by.  Give 2 or 3 hours. Or bring some soda pop, snacks or a casserole.

And more …

The Prince George Dems will hold their regular monthly meeting on Thursday, September 7 at 6 pm in the same room as above in the Human Services Building in the Prince George Government Complex, 6450 Administration Drive.  We have guest wifi, a refrigerator, microwave.  We can have a meeting and a party.

Rotary on July 12, sharing news about the upcoming election, change in the Jefferson Park Precinct voting place, and the coming of new voting machines.  If you would like to see her presentation go to our PGVA Dems Facebook page or to the Rotary Club of Prince George County Rotary page.

We did an extensive article on the upcoming election a few days ago, but updating from there, the candidate packets for the special election for the County Treasurer are now available with August 18 being the deadline for candidates to file for the office.  Katherine advises that one person, so far, has picked up a packet.

Katherine’s handouts:

first a caveat … the author’s scanner is inserting a blank page between each document. Apologies will try to get that fixed shortly.  There are only three pages of real documents.
