Challenges for rural campaigns:

Sheila Bynum-Coleman

Sheila-Bynum Coleman

Sheila Bynum-Coleman, the Democratic candidate for the 62nd Virginia House District, shared some of the strategies she is learning from the Rural Caucus of the Democratic Party of Virginia (DPVA) and other organizations, about how to campaign effectively in rural or exurban districts.  Needless to say, religious communities can play a major role in this effort, directly or indirectly, congregations are fertile sources of voters and campaign volunteers.  How best to reach them?  Providing literature and speaking when allowed are terribly important musts for a campaign.

Rebecca S. Colaw, the Suffolk lawyer who is the Democratic candidate for the 64th Virginia House District, was on her way to the meeting when she was stalled by a massive traffic jam in a more populous area of the district.  The 64th covers about 80% of Prince George County in terms of territory and voters.  We tend to forget about the 64th because the current Republican incumbent did not make himself available to Democratic constituents.  Though we are on the northern fringe of the 64th, Prince George represents the second largest voting locality in the 64th.  Rebecca reported by phone that she and volunteers are planning on knocking on Prince George doors in late July.  She is also using Facebook extensively and asks that we like her page and share it with our friends and other pages.

At this point, Delegate Lashrecse Aird  (63rd Virginia House District) is unopposed, but she still needs the support of those in her district to continue her work on behalf of our Tri-Cities area.  She and Delegate Price (95th) are hosting a webinar on July 12th at 6:30 pm to discuss new laws which went into effect on July 1.  You must rsvp to attend the webinar at www.tinyurl.com/AirdPriceWebinar.

Also in attendance were Floyd Brown, Jr. (“FJ”), candidate for District 1 Board of Supervisors, and Leila Holmes, Candidate for District 2, Prince George School Board.

Remember that all of our candidates need our support … donations, knocking on doors, sharing Facebook messages, texting, and or calling others on their behalf.

Carol Woodward is available to answer any questions about the recent meeting of the 4th Congressional District Committee on June 17.  It was a great first meeting of the reorganized 4th CDC.  We had a great time and were entirely inspired by Lieutenant Governor Ralph Northam, his recent primary opponent Tom Perriello, Senator Mark Warner, and our own 4th CD Congressman, Donald McEachin.

August 19 – Community Day in Hopewell

August 24 – Back to School Fair, Scott Park, Prince George

We may be able to have a booth at each of these events to register voters, sell our candles, and assist our candidates.

The General Election on November 7, 2017,  will be brimming with offices & candidates, both local, district, and state-wide.  This the first year of staggered term elections for the Prince George Board of Supervisors and for the School Board.  There will also be elections for the Virginia House of Delegates in all three of the districts that trisect Prince George County.  Additionally, there will be statewide races for Governor, Lieutenant Governor, and for Attorney General.  But wait, there’s more …

On November 7th, there will also be a special election to fill the seat of the Prince George Treasurer, as Jean Barker has announced that she will retire at the end of the year.  The Circuit Court set that date as the date of the special election.  Candidates must file for that seat by August 18 and Katherine Tyler, the Prince George Registrar, advises that the candidate packets will be available for pick-up soon.

Today we focus on the just the local regular general election and the list of candidates.

Candidates, District 1 BOS, District 2 BOS, District 2 School Board, Floyd M. Brown Jr., Jerry Skalsky, Leila Holmes, William "Bill" Robertson, William F. "Bill" Gandel

What happens at Rotary gets spread far and wide, it doesn’t stay at Rotary …

Both Bill Gandel and Floyd M. Brown, Jr., announced at the Prince George Rotary today that they intend to run for the Board of Supervisors (BOS).

You may remember that due to the adoption of staggered terms by the Board of Supervisors, this will be the first year that there will be only one BOS seat open in each of the two election districts in the county.

William F. “Bill” Gandel, has experience as a BOS member having served from 2011 through 2015. He is running for election from District 2.  His opponent is incumbent, William “Bill” Robertson, who is currently the Chairman of the Board of Supervisors.

FJ in Rotary Shirt

Floyd M. Brown, Jr.,

Running from District 1 is our Committee’s own Floyd M. Brown, Jr. or “FJ” as we affectionately refer to him.  FJ plans to run as a Democrat! At this time it is not known if Jerry Skalsky is going to run again or whether there will be other contenders.

We have also had at our Committee, Leila Holmes, who is running for School Board from District 2 with no incumbent.  The current school board member, Reeve Ashcraft, will finish college, so has announced that he will not run again.  We think the county will see him in office again one day. Leila has applied for membership in the Prince George Dems, but due to election laws may not run as a Democrat for a school board seat.

We will keep you posted on the candidates as the field emerges. Oh, it’s politics season.

Prince George Dems welcome candidates

If you haven’t heard the word “hustings” it has usually meant, in America, any event where candidates make campaign speeches.  It has older meanings in German and in English having to do with a hustings being a deliberative assembly or a special court, but here in the ole USA it means when politicians put it all out there, in front of each other, as they make their pitches to the voters.

The Prince George Dems meeting on April 5th, had very much that feeling.  Among the guests were Leila Holmes, running for the School Board from District 2 and  Evelina Davis, who is considering a run for the School Board from District 1.

from left Sheila Bynum-Coleman, PG Dems Chair Cynthia Mitchell, and Jerry Cantrell

Jerry Cantrell, one of three Democratic candidates for nomination to run for the 64th Virginia House of Delegates district presented at the meeting though his Democratic opponents were not present.  Both John Wandling and Rebecca S. Colaw have visited the committee before though not on the same occasion.

Tavorise Marks with Cynthia 2Both Democratic candidates for the 62nd Virginia House of Delegates district spoke. Sheila Bynum-Coleman and Tavorise Marks are the two contenders.  Bynum-Coleman was the Democratic candidate in the last election and took 40 something percent of the vote.  Marks has run before in 62nd primaries and brings military experience to his desire to serve.

Matt Handsfield, Regional Field Organizer for the Ralph Northam campaign for Governor, spoke on behalf of his campaign.  Northam is the current Lieutenant Governor.  His Primary challenger is Tom Perriello, a former U.S. Congressman.

The candidates had only two to three minutes to introduce themselves, so didn’t have much time to explain their platforms.  They were all able to stay after the meeting and connect with the members and guests present.  A local committee must remain neutral through a Primary, but individual committee members may support and endorse any candidates of their choice.

All of these candidates have facebook pages and websites so look them up and learn more about what they propose and how you can donate and volunteer.

More will follow shortly about upcoming important deadlines, caucuses, and conventions.  Ah, it is political season again …

We’ll update you on our weekly phone banking, our activities at the Back to School Fair,Cynthia & Lilian Back To School Fair2 our outreach to the faith community, our voter registration efforts and many other activities of the Committee and it members.  We will also update all on our progress securing outreach workers for the precincts on election day.

October 17 2016, vote.virginia.gov, voter portal

The election is November 8th.  By simple math that is 74 days away.  Do you have a plan on how to help elect Democrats up and down the ticket?  The very first thing to do is to double check your address and confirm your voting location.  To be sure the registrar has your correct address go to vote.virginia.gov and check it for yourself.

vote.virginia.gov is the easy to use voter portal on the State Board of Elections web site.  It was designed with you and me in mind.

2016-08-262016-08-26 (1)

After you have confirmed your address and voting place help your family and friends do the same.

Then observe some of the deadlines.  What needs to happen by when to insure that those who want to vote are eligible to vote.  Everywhere you go, ask those you encounter whether they have registered to vote.  Even asking the question plants the seed.  The date to register to vote or to update an existing registration is October 17, 2016.  That date is just around the corner.

Executive Order, Hillary Clinton, Restoration of Rights, Tim Kaine, Voter Registration

The Ticket

This is not news at this point that Hillary Clinton and Tim Kaine are the elected HillarymemeDemocratic nominees for the Presidency and Vice-Presidency.  They are now on a bus swing through Pennsylvania and Ohio to reach out to people who have been hit hard by the changes in economy.  If you have family or friends in those states, please be sure to reach out to them and show them the Hillary you support.  In fact all of us should begin our family and friends phone trees, email lists, and facebook groups to support our candidate. Encourage them to support her and to vote … vote … vote.

Restoration of Rights

By now you know that the Virginia Supreme Court struck down Governor’s McAuliffe’s blanket restoration of rights for certain categories of former felons.  Reading the Richmond Times Dispatch of Saturday, July 30, the Gov’s plan is to issue individual restoration of rights orders for each of the 12,800 Virginians who had registered to vote pursuant to the Executive Order.  Each of those individuals will receive a restoration order in the mail and possibly a voter registration form in the same mailing.  Those individuals will need to register to vote again.

Voter Registration Challenges

The Chesterfield Registrar was recently quoted at length in the Richmond Times Dispatch urging people to not register to vote with people who just walk up to them or have voter registration booths at community events.  His statement essentially was essentially that voter registrations would be crumpled up and discarded if not of party favored by the people registering the new voters.

Think of how you personally want to handle this as you register voters.  In our view it is2012-05-05 10.45.12 better to be clear that though we represent the Democratic Party, that we are devoted to full voter participation in the electoral process. We can also have the Registrar names, locations, and phone numbers handy to share with skeptical people so they can go into their respective registrar’s offices to register in person.  The other alternative is for possible registrants  to register online either at home or at any DMV office.

What are you thoughts about how to proceed?

Reminders

Prince George Dems will meet on Thursday, August 4, at 6 pm at the Prince George Human Services Building, 6450 Administration Drive, Prince George Government Complex.  Phone banking will follow the meeting.

The Prince George Democratic Committee also phone banks and does voter registration out of the same location from 6 to 8 pm every Thursday.  Curious.  Come visit.

If we don’t stop shooting…

dignity, homo sapiens, killings, police

What else matters if we don’t stop shooting each other?

Writing this in the aftermath of at least two more killings of black men by police and the slaughter of police in Dallas by a black man.

We can do so much for society if we get on a path of regulating more expertly who may have access to guns and how we train and expect of police in terms of professional and safe conduct.

Those are the obvious regulatory approaches.

Underlying that, though, are our individual and personal feelings towards those ‘different’ from ourselves and how we conduct ourselves to bestow respect on other human beings.

Using the term ‘different’ is difficult.  People of various colors, religions, heights, weights, are not ‘different’ from each other.  We are all one specie, homo sapiens.  We vary is some of the values listed and we may have different cultural and historical experiences, but today, now, at this moment, if we meet we are equals. We are all examples of one mankind.

What happens next?  We decide.

The Voices for the Vote Rally was about more than just restoration of rights in the modern sense.  It also provided a history of the vote in the United States, particularly since the end of the Civil War.  This Progress-Index article does a great job capturing the event and the histories provided.

Officials and groups urge renewed registration efforts
