16th VASEN, 62nd HOD, June 11 Democratic Primaries

Only 2 Dem Primaries in Prince George:

There are two Democratic Primaries in Prince George. Senator Rosalyn R. Dance is being challenged by Joe Morrissey in the 16th Virginia Senate District (16th VASEN.) In the 62nd Virginia House District (62nd HOD) in which there is no incumbent (Riley Ingram is retiring), Tavorise Marks and Lindsey Dougherty are vying for the Democratic nomination.

Not sure if you are covered by these districts? If your normal voting precinct is one of the following you are in one or both of the Democratic Primaries:

Union Branch Precinct (Union Branch Baptist Church) 3356 Union Branch Road, 16th VASEN

Rives Precinct (Walton School) 4101 Courthouse Road 16th VASEN

Courts Precinct (Courthouse) 6601 Courts Drive 16th VASEN

Jefferson Park Precinct (Faith Baptist Church) 5501 Middle Road 16h VASEN (partial) , 62nd HOD

You vote in your normal voting place if in one of these precincts. You may vote in-person absentee through June 8th (Saturday) at the General Registrar’s office, 2nd Floor South Wing of the County Administration Building or on Primary Day (June 11) from 6 am until 7pm at your regular voting place.

Need more help?

The Prince George Democrats are meeting Thursday night at 6 pm at the Prince George Human Services Building, 6450 Administration Drive, Prince George Government Complex. You can get all of your questions answered there.

Entrance to 6450 Administration Dr., Prince George VA … Human Services Building

We understand that Lindsey Dougherty (62nd HOD candidate for nomination) and Michele Joyce (Democratic nominee for the 64th HOD) have asked to speak as has Virginia Smith, Democratic nominee for the 15th VASEN.

Just so you know.

In Democratic primaries the Prince George Democratic Committee must remain neutral, however any member of the Committee may support and advocate (politely, please) for the candidate of his or her choice. All candidates will be asking supporters for their votes, their time, and their donations. Question is … are you an investor or a window shopper.

Board of Supervisor Seats

Three Board of Supervisor seats will be on the ballot in 2019. The incumbent in District 1, Alan Carmichael, and the incumbents in District 2, Donald Hunter and TJ Webb, are up for reelection should they decide to run.

The previous version listed Marlene Waymack, rather than, TJ Webb being up for re-election Thanks to Supervisor FJ Brown for that correction.

School Board Seats

Bobby Cox’s seat is up for election in 2019 in District 1 as are the seats in District 2 currently held by Kevin Foster and Louis Stevenson.

Constitutional Officers

All of the Constitutional Officer seats except for the Clerk of the Court are up for election.

  • Commissioner of Revenue – Incumbent Darlene Rowsey
  • Treasurer – Incumbent Susan Vargo

August 30 Special Session, General Assembly, Governor Ralph Northam, OneVirginia2021, Redistricting, Special Session

August 30 – Special Session of the General Assembly:

Governor Northam has ordered a special session on August 30. The purpose for this session is to redraw certain districts created by the Republicans in 2011 to protect red districts by creating minority majority districts.  The court declared those districts unconstitutional and ordered redrawn districts by October 30, 2018 to be in effect in the 2019 elections.

The Election Results in 2019 are critical for Democrats:

All Virginia House of Delegates and Senate seats will be up for election in 2019. The Virginia legislators elected in 2019 will be the legislators who control Census redistricting in 2021. If the Republicans remain in the majority in the General Assembly, they will continue in their efforts to redraw districts that will dilute and restrict the votes of Democrats, progressives, independents, minorities, women, anyone they view as the enemies of their ultra-conservative agenda.

Visit www.onevirginia2021.org which has been advocating for bipartisan redistricting in Virginia.  It has a free Advocacy training on September 15, 2018 in Alexandria, Virginia.  It is a free training, but One Virginia 2021 is a nonprofit and would appreciate a donation, whether you plan to attend the training or not.  You can register for the training HERE.

Denya Hankerson, Electoral Board, Lillian Boyd, Protect the Vote, Sharon Goertz

Protect the Vote presentation:

Lillian Boyd and Denya Hankerson, our representatives on the Prince George Electoral Board, spoke efficiently and accurately last night at the PG Dems meeting about the security measures in place to protect the vote in Prince George County, really across the Commonwealth.

Lillian Boyd & Denya Hankerson

Their presentation covered the entire gamut, from the training of election officials, certification of the machines, the absentee, and in-person voting process,  the Canvass of the vote the day following the election, and the actual certification of the vote.

Both parties work so hard to get voters to turn out and actually vote.  When those voters do vote, their votes must be protected and must count.

Lillian Boyd has been the Committee’s representative on the Prince George Electoral Board for a number of years and Denya Hankerson was appointed.  to represent our Committee this year, replacing our prior representative, Sharon Goertz.

The representation on the Electoral Board is determined by the party of the Governor.  The party of the Governor is allowed two representatives on the Electoral Board of each locality.  The third seat is held by the other major party.  Each committee presents its nominees to the Circuit Court Chief Judge by letter and if satisfactory to the Judge the representative is then sworn-in to serve a four-year term.

We have been fortunate to have such competent and committed representatives to our Electoral Board.
