Dougherty, Morrissey, Prince George VA Primaries 2019

Morrissey Win Decisive:

Joe Morrissey won the Democratic nomination for the 16th Virginia Senate District race in November. At this point there is no Republican opponent. The votes have not been certified, of course, but various outlets describe his win was by 12 to 14 points. A two digit win is rather indisputable.

Dougherty Win Very Close:

The apparent Democratic nomine for the 62nd Virginia House District is Lindsey Doughterty over Tavorise Marks. The race was close with reportedly only about a 3.5 % difference between the two. If Dougherty is confirmed as the winner then she will face Republican Carrie E. Coyner in November.

Ruff Wins Republican Primary for the 15th VASEN:

With little surprise, Frank Ruff took about 80% of the vote in the only Republican Primary in Prince George County. He will face Democrat Virginia Smith of Prince George in the November election.

Dems State Meeting Update

The Democrats met in Richmond last Saturday (March 2nd) for their Quarter 1 meeting. The Congressional District Committees heard reports, per usual, from the elected and appointed members of the Steering Committee (executive committee).

A few highlights:

  • The coffers are well in the black and the digital and data staff of the party are being enlarged
  • The End of Session Decompression Fundraiser on Friday night after the Steering Committee Meeting raised over $13,000
  • The Blue Commonwealth Gala will be held on June 15 at Main Street Station
  • 2018 election data will be in Votebuilder (the VAN) within the week of March 4th
  • Petitions for candidates should be turned into the appropriate Nominating Committees no sooner than March 11 and no later than March 28 at 5 pm.
  • There will be DPVA (Democratic Party of Virginia) emails out this week to Committee Chairs regarding Mobilize and other tools.
  • Follow @vademocrats on Instagram.

The lead speaker was Congressman McEachin

Our own Congressman Donald McEachin was the lead speaker at the meeting on Saturday. He focused on the unity our party needs to maintain to sweep the Virginia House and Senate this Fall as well to elect and reelect Democratic Congressmen and Senators nationally.

The photo below is not the best. It literally was a standing room only meeting and there was constant movement along the aisles.

4th CD Committee Meeting April 13

A meeting of the 4th Congressional District Committee has been scheduled for April 13, 2019, at 11:30 a.m. at the Virginia Diner. Please notify Carol Woodward at woodwardcd@aol.com if you would like to attend. There is a fantastic lunch buffet that doesn’t stop. Attendees may also order directly from the menu if they prefer. It would be great to have a number of our committee members there.

Attorney General Mark Herring, Blackface, Governor Ralph Northam, Lt. Governor Justin Fairfax, Resign, Sexual Assault

Northam, Fairfax, Herring

After the startling revelations about Governor Northam’s yearbook photos and another occasion of blackface, Lt. Governor Justin Fairfax has been accused of sexual assault (essentially) fourteen years ago, and Attorney General admitted he had appeared at a party as a blackface rapper, along with some pals also in wigs and blackface. So where are we?

Governor Northam has retracted his initial admission and apology, at least in part, but revealed dressing as Michael Jackson, with blackface and doing the moonwalk on another occasion. Reporting is that he is conferring with his cabinet, other leaders, and continuing to work on the budget and other matters with the General Assembly. No resignation appears to be a near term possibility. Most, but not all, of the elected Democrats, have urged him to resign, though they have become quieter as the Fairfax allegations and Herring admission have emerged.

Lt. Gover Fairfax’s situation is a dynamically developing story as his accuser has related what she alleges happened in that hotel room in 2004 at the Democratic National Convention. Fairfax continues to deny the allegations of assault and assert that it was a consensual encounter. A troubling story is developing that she related the event to Congressman Bobby Scott (VA 3rd) though it is not clear when that conversation was had. It is reported that Lt. Gov. Fairfax has hired the same attorney that represented Justice Kavanaugh.

Now the revelation from Attorney General Herring of his blackface imitation in 1980 while he was a college student. He has released a written statement and apology.

In light of these disclosures or allegations should all three resign, turning at least the governor role to Kirk Cox? Should the ballot box be the remedy to the continued election of them when their current terms are concluded?

The Prince George Democratic Committee will be discussing these matters at its meeting tonight at 6 pm in the Prince George Human Services Building at 6450 Administration Drive in the Government Complex.

Op ED

This post is the opinion of the writer only, not the official position of the Prince George Democratic Committee. The Committee will meet on February 7th and will determine its communication at that meeting.

Governor Northam must resign. His ability to lead our party, to be embraced by our confidence in him, and to represent our party in the face of the hypocritical positions of the Republican Party have evaporated.

Can he be forgiven? Yes, there is room to forgive when there is true contrition and admission. We have not heard that. The suggestion that doing a kind of black-face homage to Michael Jackson is somehow OK, while other episodes of blackface are abhorrent, doesn’t cut it. Let’s not even talk about the KKK costume.

Even forgiveness in the face of contrition still would not leave room for Governor Northam to continue in office. Sad but true.

And to our smug Republican friends. Look at your own house. You ran Corey Stewart against Ralph Northam. Who are you to judge?

Equal Rights Amendment, ERA, Volunteeers

December 6th, exactly one week ago today, our Prince George Democratic Committee met for its final meeting of the year. We thanked and celebrated the volunteers who helped provide voter information at our precincts on Election Day by having pizza and appetizers catered by Luca Italian Restaurant.

Among our business items was the adoption of the Resolution urging Ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment. The Resolution was to be on the Board of Supervisors Agenda on December 11th.  Tammie Miller Jennings, State Vice-Chair of the Ratification Campaign, educated the Committee on the history of the movement, the history of the amendment, and the future of the amendment if the Virginia General Assembly ratifies the ERA. The Committee adopted the resolution unanimously.

Later the Committee continued with its social activities and one of our volunteer was our drawing pot of $33.  We are betting she will come back for another meeting.

Stay tuned for more on the ERA

To break the suspense, the ERA Ratification Resolution did pass the BOS, but more about that in a bit.
