16th VA Senate District, 62nd VA House District, Primary, Virginia Smith Democratic Nominee 15th Senate District

June 8th Democratic Caucus Canceled for the 15th Senate District.

Virginia Smith, Prince George resident, educator, writer, and entrepreneur was the only person to prefile for nomination as the Democratic Nominee for the 15th Virginia Senate District. Over 80% of Prince George is in the 15th. She is the nominee so you do not need to vote anywhere in Prince George if you are in support of her candidacy as a Democrat.

There is a Republican Primary for the 15th which pits Dale L. Sturdifen against the incumbent Frank M. Ruff, Jr. But that does not involve Virginia Smith.

16th Virginia Senate Democratic Primary:

If you vote in the Union Branch, Rives, Courts, or Jefferson Park precinct you will want to vote in the Democratic Primary. Joe Morressey is challenging Senator Rosalyn R. Dance of Petersburg to be the democratic nominee for that seat. You vote in your regular polling place for that primary.

62nd House of Delegates Democratic Primary:

Part of Jefferson Park precinct is in the 62nd House of Delegates District. Riley Ingram is retiring so there is no incumbent. Tarorise K. Marks and Lindsey M. Dougherty are viying for the Democratic nomination to that seat.

Important Dates for the Primaries:

May 20 – Last day to register to vote if not already registered or to update an existing registration

June 4 -Deadline is 5pm to request an absentee ballot by mail

June 8- Last day for in person absentee voting. Registrar’s office open 9 am – 5 pm

June 11 – Primary Election Day. All county precincets open from 6 am til 7pm

PG Dems Meet on April 4:

Delegate Lashrecse Aird (63rd Virginia House District) will speak to the Committee on April 4. She is speaking instead of Rosalyn R. Dance, Virginia Senate District 16. Senator Dance developed a conflict on that evening. Delegate Aird will updatre the Prince George Dems on the 2019 Legislative Session, the court ordered redistricting, and the upcoming Democratic Primary on June 11th.

Delegate Aird (center)

The Prince George Dems meet at the Prince George Human Services Building, 6450 Administration Drive, Prince George Government Complex. The meeting begins at 6 pm and, as usual, we will have a full evening of planning and updates. The objective is to have a purposeful meeting. The length of the meeting is less important than the accomplishments of the meeting.

Update on Virginia Smith Campaign

Prince Georgian, Virgina Smith, will challenge Senator Frank Ruff for the 15th Virginia Senate Seat. The 15th is the largest (geography-wise) electoral district in Virginia. We will receive an update from our Chairman, Carroll Briggs, who has participated in the 15th Democratic Nominating Committee.

Community Day – May 4:

The Prince George Democrats will have a booth at the Prince George Community Day on May 4 at Scott Park. We need volunteers to sign up at our meeting on April 4. We will be hosting information and literature for Democratic candidates, hosting a household item (small appliance type) sale, and registering voters. There are other booths, vendors, races, and displays at the event. It is one of the few county-wide events of the year. Sign up for a 2 to 4 hour shift at our booth. There will be opportunity to circulate and sample the other offerings at Community Day.

May meeting of the PG DEMS -May 2:

Please share Prince George Dems information with your friends, family, neighbors, and colleagues. Many hands make light work. This election year, we have the opportunity to take both houses in the General Assembly. Let’s do it!

4th CD Meeting is on April 13th

Please contact Carol Woodward if you plan to attend the Spring meeting of the 4th Congressional District Committee on April 13th at the Virginia Diner in Wakefield at 11:30 am. You can reach Carol at Carol@princegeorgevadems.org, or via Facebook messenger.

Floyd Brown, Jr & B. Renee Taylor Garnett District 1 Dem Candidates for Board of Supervisors

Please put October 1 on your calendar for the Prince George Democrats’ Townhall for the two Democratic Candidates for the two District 1 seats on the Board of Supervisors

The Townhall will be at the Disputanta Community Center from 6 to 8 p.m., on October 1. There will be light refreshments and a great opportunity to get to know Floyd and Renee better.  It will also be a super opportunity to share your concerns and issues and to hear about their visions for District 1.

Remember and share with all that this is one election where you can vote for both Democratic candidates.  There are two seats for District 1 on the Board of Supervisors. All of the other candidates are supposedly Independents, but certainly do not identify with principles of the Democratic Party.

Plan to spread the word about this important opportunity to get to know and ultimately elect two Democratic neighbors to the BOS.

DPVA To Launch Automated Calls Informing Voters About Dick Black’s Bill to Keep Confederate Flag on Virginia License Plates

LEESBURG — Today, the Democratic Party of Virginia is launching automated calls to voters in the 13th Senate District calling attention to Senator Dick Black’s relationship with the Confederate flag . In 2003, Senator Black  introduced a bill  specifically allowing the Sons of Confederate Veterans to display the Confederate flag on Virginia license plates. Yet, in light of the Governor’s recent actions taking the flag off of license plates, Black has refused to say a single word on the matter .
“Dick Black, who was so eager to go out on a limb for the Sons of Confederate Veterans, has been eerily silent on their cause now,”  said Morgan Finkelstein, press secretary for the Democratic Party of Virginia.  “He went above and beyond to ensure the Confederate flag would be on Virginia license plates, but can’t even bring himself to respond to questions on the subject today. That’s not leadership.”
Below is a script that will reach voters in the 13th Senate District:

“This is Tyler from the Democratic Party of Virginia calling with an important message. Did you know that your State Senator, Dick Black, introduced a bill to ensure that the Confederate battle flag could remain on Virginia license plates.  Senator Dick Black went above and beyond to ensure this symbol of racism and slavery could be on Virginia-issued plates. Even worse, he’s now hiding from questions about his support of the Confederate Flag. Call Dick Black at  (804) 698-7513  and tell him he should be ashamed of his support of this offensive symbol.  Paid for by the Democratic Party of Virginia, Va. Dep’t of Elections ID# PP-12-00537,  (804) 644-1966 .”

Politics is alive and well in Prince George County

Democratic candidates and candidates for nomination headlined the Agenda of the PG Dems on April 2nd in the 1st Floor Community Room of the Human Services Building.

Sheila Bynum-Coleman, candidate for the 62nd Virginia House District, spoke about the precinct by precinct analysis her campaign and the Chesterfield Democratic Committee has done which indicates that the 62nd is definitely winnable.  Riley Ingram, the Republican incumbent has held the seat for two decades and Democrats know it is time for a change. At this point Bynum-Coleman does not have a challenger in the Democratic Primary. Below Bynum-Coleman (r) speaks with Sharon Goertz, Prince George Dem and Electoral Board member.

Three of the contenders for the 63rd Virginia House District in the June 9 Democratic Primary also spoke.  Gerry Rawlinson, Lashrecse Aird, and Atiba Muse briefly focused on their backgrounds and how their experience qualified them for this post.  Rawlinson has a background in nursing and as a business owner, Aird has experience as a political committee leader, legislative aide to then Delegate Rosalyn Dance and her gubernatorial appointments to state commissions by Governor McAuliffe, and  Muse cited his constituent and legislative assistant experience with Congressman Bobby Scott and his experience as an elected School Board member as unique qualifiers for the position as a state Delegate. The Democratic incumbent, Joe Preston, is a candidate for the Democratic Nomination for the 16th Virginia Senate District.
