Good thing the PG Dems meet on Thursday night

Yes, the Prince George Dems will have their regular meeting on August 3, 2017, at 6 pm in the Prince George Human Services Building, 6450 Administration Drive, in the Prince George Government Complex.  We are expecting a number of the campaigns to be represented to update the Committee on the status of the race.

Colaw for the 64th event being planned for August 12

Rebecca Colaw

Rebecca S. Colaw

A day of action is being planned for the Colaw Campaign on August 12 which will include training, canvassing in some of our more walkable neighborhoods with Rebecca Colaw. She is also seeking input from Prince Georgians about issues in and for the County.  Carol Dois Woodward will be the contact point for the event on August 12 and she can be reached on Facebook, by Messenger, or by email at woodwardcd@aol.com.  So come meet the candidate on August 12, wear some comfy shoes, and help spread the word.

Prince George Special Election for Treasurer update

Susan Vargo is the only person, so far, who has filed for the Treasurer special election. The registrar’s office confirms that her filing has been certified and she will be on the ballot. Ms. Vargo currently works in the Treasurer’s office.  We have heard two filing deadline dates for this election … August 17 and August 18.  If in doubt file by the 17th.

PG Dems Booth at Prince George Back to School Fair

The PG Dems have a booth at the Prince George Back to School Fair to be held on August 24th, from 4 to 7 pm.  This is one of the largest community events in Prince 2014 Back to School Fair - 3rd (123) (1)George.  Last year over 1200 back packs filled with school supplies were distributed.  In addition there was a petting zoo, therapy dogs, snacks, children’s activities, and other enjoyable things were going on at the event.  At our booth we will not only have school supplies to put into the children’s bags, we will have any campaign literature provided to us and we will be located next to Rebecca Colaw’s booth.  We will need PG Dems to help manage the booth, perhaps register voters, and provide information on the Restoration of Rights (RoR).  We will have a sign-up sheet at the meeting on Thursday night.

2017 Local Elections in Prince George County

Prince George County Virginia SealTwo Board of Supervisor and two School Board seats will be on the ballot in the November 2017 general election.  There will be one of each elected from District 1 and District 2. These offices are in addition to state elections, including the gubernatorial election.  More about state elections will be published shortly.

If you are interested in running as a candidate for one of those local government seats, this Local Candidate Bulletin will spell out the required documents, costs, if any, and filing deadlines.

Reeve Ashcraft has already announced publically that he will not run for school board re-election from district 2 and it is assumed that Bill Robertson will run for re-election for the District 2 Board of Supervisor seat.  Bill Robertson identifies as a Republican and school board members run as non-partisan, though Reeve Ashcraft identifies as a Republican.

Total of 12 running for Prince George District 1 and 2 supervisor seats – News – The Progress-Index – Petersburg, VA.

This is a fairly comprehensive article from Amir Vera of the Progress-Index, but there are a few things to point out …

Melvin C. Jones has stated to many that he did not foreclose running for reelection this fall as a quid pro quo for the interim appointment to the District 2 vacant seat.  For your information, though Melvin is running as an Independent, he is a member of the Prince George Dems.

Proudly, there are two Democratic candidates running in District 1 against the two Independent incumbents.  B. Renee Taylor Garnett and Floyd M. Brown, Jr. are members of our Democratic Committee and are excellently qualified for the two District 1 seats.

There is another Independent candidate running in District 1 … Engo H. Radant.  Can anyone share information about this candidate?

As you meet or interact with the candidates for the Board of Supervisors in your district ask them point blank if they support single member voting districts, rather than the at-large district system we now have.

Schapiro’s headline that the stakes are low doesn’t strike true with this Prince Georgian. True Prince George doesn’t have much presence in the 16th VA Senate District (about 7 or 8%), but that seat has a profound influence on the County.  Read Schaprio’s column and draw your own conclusions.

See you at the PG Dems meeting on Thursday, April 2 at 5:30 p.m. in the PG Social Services Building (1st Floor), 6450 Administration Drive, Prince George Government Complex, BLDG #12.   We now have a request from Atiba Muse, candidate for nomination in the 63rd VA House District to be on the Agenda.  The Chair, Cynthia Mitchell, will designate a time limit for candidates on the Agenda to speak.

Voters in the 16th Virginia District …  August 9 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. is the date for the unassembled caucus to elect the Democratic Nominee in the special election on November 4th to fill the seat left vacant by Senator Henry Marsh’s retirement in early July.

The Virginia 16th Senate District includes parts of Richmond and Chesterfield, all of Hopewell, and Petersburg and parts of Dinwiddie  and Prince George.

On August 9th Prince George Voters who reside in the 16th Virginia Senate District, who are registered voters will vote in one  of the two voting places designated in Prince George for this special process.  The Prince George Precincts in the Virginia 16th Senate District are Jefferson Park, Courts, Rives, and Union Branch.

One polling place will be the Prince George County Circuit Courthouse at 6601 Courts Drive in the county government complex.  The Prince George Dems are working on securing one more voting location and should have that precinct confirmed by Monday, July 28th.

These eligible voters must sign a pledge that they will vote for non other than the Democratic Nominee in the November Special Election.  One need not be a resident in the voting precinct designated by the Prince George Democratic Committee for the Nomination Caucus.

This is a very fast moving process.  The Democratic Nominee will be elected on August 9, certified on August 15, and the special election will be on November 4, 2014, the date of the regular Election Day.

More information will be provided as soon as possible.

Please review the Call to Caucus and the Rules of the Caucus below.  Make copies, take to your churches, civic groups, and neighborhood associations.  This is so terribly important for Prince George.

More information to come. Don’t hesitate to contact Carol Woodward at 804-691-8486 or at woodwardcd@aol.com for more information.

All of the topics above and others will be discussed on Thursday, July 3 from 5:30 to 7:00 2012-09-17 17.45.58p.m. at the regular monthly meeting of the Prince George Democratic Committee.  We meet at the Prince George County Administration Building, 2nd Floor Employee Lounge. The address is 6602 Courts Drive, Prince George, VA 23875,

Senator Marsh’s Retirement:

His announcement on Tuesday surprised most of us.  There will be a special election and the date for that has yet to be announced.  His Virginia Senate District includes part of Prince George so we will be engaged along with Petersburg, Dinwiddie, Chesterfield, Hopewell, and Richmond.  Get your boots on!

Voter Photo ID:

This nifty Republican law went into effect yesterday (July 1) and the rules and regs are still being developed to implement this requirement.  Registrars will be able to provide free Voter ID cards, but there are details that are important.  Most important of all is to identify the 1936 registered voters in Prince George who do not have a driver’s license. That is almost one tenth of the registered voters in Prince George County. Scary.

Community Service Project … Back to School Supplies Fair:

The Prince George Social Services Department has organized its second Back to School Supplies Fair and is requesting help from individuals and organizations to donate either money or supplies for the event.  Click the link to learn more. Backtoschool20140001 .

Feedback appreciated.
