69 days, Back to School Fair, Donald A. McEachin, Hillary Clinton, Phone Banking, Precinct Planning, Regular Meeting, September 1 Dems Meeting, Tim Kaine, You In?

Join us at our regular meeting Thursday night at 6 pm in the Prince George Human Services Building, 6450 Administration Drive in the Prince George Government Complex.  We’ll hold our update / business meeting for about an hour +/- and then join the Democratic Party Organizer and interns in phone banking.  It is a lot of fun.  Last Thursday night we had at least 25 people hitting the phone, had a great time doing it, and had the pleasure of State Senator Donald A. McEachin dropping by to thank us for our efforts.

DonaldMcEachin

In the meeting portion we will be voting on the membership applications of Nathaniel Dozier, Geneva Taylor, and Eula Moore.  We have an application from Mary Gromovsky for Associate Membership and though we don’t (or at least haven’t voted on Associate membership) we hope you will give Mary a warm welcome as well.

We’ll update you on our weekly phone banking, our activities at the Back to School Fair,Cynthia & Lilian Back To School Fair2 our outreach to the faith community, our voter registration efforts and many other activities of the Committee and it members.  We will also update all on our progress securing outreach workers for the precincts on election day.

Looking forward to seeing everyone.

Executive Order, Hillary Clinton, Restoration of Rights, Tim Kaine, Voter Registration

The Ticket

This is not news at this point that Hillary Clinton and Tim Kaine are the elected HillarymemeDemocratic nominees for the Presidency and Vice-Presidency.  They are now on a bus swing through Pennsylvania and Ohio to reach out to people who have been hit hard by the changes in economy.  If you have family or friends in those states, please be sure to reach out to them and show them the Hillary you support.  In fact all of us should begin our family and friends phone trees, email lists, and facebook groups to support our candidate. Encourage them to support her and to vote … vote … vote.

Restoration of Rights

By now you know that the Virginia Supreme Court struck down Governor’s McAuliffe’s blanket restoration of rights for certain categories of former felons.  Reading the Richmond Times Dispatch of Saturday, July 30, the Gov’s plan is to issue individual restoration of rights orders for each of the 12,800 Virginians who had registered to vote pursuant to the Executive Order.  Each of those individuals will receive a restoration order in the mail and possibly a voter registration form in the same mailing.  Those individuals will need to register to vote again.

Voter Registration Challenges

The Chesterfield Registrar was recently quoted at length in the Richmond Times Dispatch urging people to not register to vote with people who just walk up to them or have voter registration booths at community events.  His statement essentially was essentially that voter registrations would be crumpled up and discarded if not of party favored by the people registering the new voters.

Think of how you personally want to handle this as you register voters.  In our view it is2012-05-05 10.45.12 better to be clear that though we represent the Democratic Party, that we are devoted to full voter participation in the electoral process. We can also have the Registrar names, locations, and phone numbers handy to share with skeptical people so they can go into their respective registrar’s offices to register in person.  The other alternative is for possible registrants  to register online either at home or at any DMV office.

What are you thoughts about how to proceed?

Reminders

Prince George Dems will meet on Thursday, August 4, at 6 pm at the Prince George Human Services Building, 6450 Administration Drive, Prince George Government Complex.  Phone banking will follow the meeting.

The Prince George Democratic Committee also phone banks and does voter registration out of the same location from 6 to 8 pm every Thursday.  Curious.  Come visit.

4th CD Primary, 4th Congressional District, Bernie Sanders, Ella Ward, Elliott Fausz, Hillary Clinton, Primary, Senator A. Donald McEachin

Primary turnout:

Of the 21765 registered voters in Prince George County, only 6583 turned out to vote or roughly 30.5% of the total registered voters. Of those 6583 votes the Democratic candidates garnered 2567 votes.  Hillary Clinton received 1994 votes, Bernie Sanders 566 votes and 7 uniformed souls voted for Martin O’Malley.  O’Malley had withdrawn from the race, but the ballots had been printed.

On the Republican side of the ledger the top three vote getters by large margins were Trump with 1939 votes, Rubio with 932 votes, and Ted Cruz with 779 votes.

PG Dems meeting:

Sen McEachin 1 (2)The regular monthly meeting was held Thursday night.  The highlight of the meeting was the visit by Senator A. Donald McEachin,VA 9th Senate District) who joined us to announce that he had filed to run for election to Congress from the 4th Congressional District.  Previously, Prince George had been split between the 3rd and the 4th Congressional Districts, with Bobby Scott representing the 3rd and Randy Forbes representing the 4th.

After winning a court battle a number of districts were redrawn to remedy the racially gerrymandered congressional district which had been engineered by the GOP.  Now all of Prince George is in the 4th as is Richmond and Petersburg.  This removed the 4th CD from the safe GOP districts.  After doing the math the Republican Randy Forbes decided to run in the safe 2nd CD where his friend Scott Rigell is retiring.

Senator McEachin is a lawyer in private practice and has been in the Virginia Senate since 2007.  He is married to Colette is also a lawyer and this Henrico couple have three daughters.  You may learn more about Senator McEachin at www.donaldmceachin.com.

Sen McEachin 3

On June 14 there will be another Primary to select the nominee for the 4th CD.  It is rumored that Elliot Fausz (Chesterfield) and Ella Ward (Chesapeake) will be candidates for the Democratic nomination as well.

DPVA, Hillary Clinton, Jefferson-Jackson Dinner, Susan Swecker, vademocrats.org

This real focus of this article is on the demographics of Democratic politics in recent statewide Virginia elections despite the tightly focused headline about Hillary.

Keep in mind that the Democratic Party of Virginia has a new Chair … Susan Swecker, a tough politico in her own right.  She is obviously making changes at the Party. Good changes from what I see.

This year the Jefferson-Jackson Dinner (“JJ Dinner” for short)  may be … hold your breath … in Northern Virginia.  Hold your breath again  … it may not be called the Jefferson-Jackson Dinner, even.  Swecker is quoted as saying “Its not going to be your granddaddy’s JJ Dinner”.

Go Susan, go!  I am tired of our party being dominated by our past and some of that past is disgusting.  We have evolved.  We are evolving.  Let’s look to the future, not to a past dominated by slave owners and abject racists, even if they were founding fathers, war heroes, presidents, state governors or legislators. Let’s atone for our past mistakes by creating a humane, competent, stewarding future.
