Join the meeting on July 2:

At 6 pm our Chair, Juanita Thorne, will convene the meeting via Zoom. We have so much to discuss and so many updates to share with the members and friends of the Prince George Democratic Committee.

June 23 Democratic Primary:

We have two members on the Prince George Board of Elections, Denya Hankerson and Dr. Lillian Boyd. On July 23rd there was actually a Republican Primary as well. All 10 precincts and the Central Absentee Precinct were open and staffed. Safety measures, including social distancing protocols, and hand hygiene were instituted. So it was a very busy day for our two electoral Board Members. We may here more about how the election went. This is good preparation for voting procedures in the General Election in November.

4th Congressional District (CD):

Congressman A. Donald McEachin won the June 23rd Democratic Primary with over 80% of the vote district wide. He will be challenged by Republican in November.

We must say a word of appreciation and encouragement to Cazel Levine, who challenged Congressman McEachin in the primary. We hope she keeps her Democratic fervor active. Democrats are needed at all levels of government and in many advocacy areas.

Senator Mark Warner up for Reelection:

Yes, Senator Warner has a Republican challenger in the November election. You will never see Republican opponent names mention here. He was quoted in the Tuesday Times-Dispatch referring to “…Mark Warner’s do-nothing career …” so let’s send this Republican packing in November.

Let’s elect Joseph “Joe” Biden:

Isn’t it time to end the nightmare that began for our country in 2016. Registering new voters, educating voters, encouraging early voting, volunteering (socially distancing of course), and donating all matter if we want to get rid of the evil-doer currently in the White House.

New voting opportunities:

On July 1 legislation goes into effect providing for no excuse absentee voting. The window for absentee voting will essentially allow Virginia voters to vote early, either by absentee in-person or by mail-in absentee ballot. We don’t know what the corona virus has in store for us. So let’s make voting early a priority for all Democrats.

Priority & Strategy Sessions Ahead!

At the PG Dems meeting on February 1, 2018, the following new officers were elected;

Chair – Carroll Briggs

Vice Chair – Pete Washington

Secretary – Tammie Miller Jennings

Treasurer – Juanita Thorne.

There are other subcommittee position s in the committee, but the above officers are members of the executive committee.  Due to illness and travel out of the country, only Carroll and Juanita could actually be at the meeting.  Soon we will post some short bios and pictures of our new officers,

CarrollandRolandMcAuliffeOpeningA few words now about Carroll.  He served in the past as Vice-Chair of the Committee for four years.  He was the lead on the Civil Rights Pioneers Celebrations hosted by the PG Dems and the NAACP in 2012.  So he comes on board with a lot of knowledge about our Local Committee and the Democratic Party of Virginia.  More at a later time.  Carroll is pictured at left.

Short Recap of Meeting:

After the election of officers and an updated financial report, District 1 Board of Supervisor (BOS) Member, Floyd Brown, Jr. (FJ) gave an update on the functioning of the BOS particularly with regard to the schedule of meetings for the next couple of months and the process for seeking appointment to various County Boards and Commissions. To be appointed to any of the County’s Boards or Commissions, a citizen must complete an application.   At this link on the County website, you will also find the list of expiring terms and descriptions of the bodies.

He urged everyone to get involved with our local government and community organizations. Dates are pending at this point for a series of Town Halls in the planning stages for District 1 by FJ and the other District 1 Supervisor, Alan Carmichael. Stay tuned.

Carroll advised the group that he and the executive committee will be communicating to identify priorities and strategies for the PG Dems.  He invites and solicits input from every member of the Committee and from those in the community with Democratic principles and ideals.  He urged that this is not the time in our history to sit back.  We must make history and protect our country.  He further reported that Tammie Miller Jennings, Lillian Boyd, and Pete Washington will be hosting a strategy session on February 8th at 6 pm.  The meeting place should be secured in the next day or two and that meeting place will be announced.

The PG Dems will hold their next regular business meeting on March 1.

15th Virginia Senate District, Candidates for Office, Carroll Briggs, Juanita Thorne, Officer Elections, Senator Frank Ruff, Tammie Miller Jennings

The Prince George Dems to elect officers:

Please attend the meeting on February 1st.  Yes, that is Thursday of this coming week.  The weather played havoc with our meeting efforts in January.  Voting members were elected at the makeup meeting on January 11, but the notice was short so we decided to delay the election of officers until our regular meeting on February 1st.

Meeting time is at 6 pm at the Prince George Human Services Building, 6450 Administration Drive, Prince George Government Complex.  The meeting is in the Community Meeting room on the 1st floor of the building.  The building is ADA compliant and the meeting is open to the public.

Candidates for office to date:

Chair – Carroll Briggs

Vice-Chair – Pete Washington and Tammie Miller Jennings

Secretary –

Treasurer – Juanita Thorne

Note: that nominations will be taken from the floor

Ever Heard of Gerrymandering?

The image below is a depiction of the 15th Virginia Senate District, held by Republican Frank Ruff, whose districts covers most of Prince George County.  When we met recently he told me that this district was created by Democrats.  It was redistricted in 2011 when the Republicans controlled the process.  The drive to Clarksville, where he resides, took this writer almost an hour and a half drive each way.  However, Senator Ruff, met with me for over an hour, was very direct, and even paid for the coffee.  Thank you, Senator Ruff.
