PG Dems meet on April 5:

At this meeting, we will be making plans for our booth at the May 5 Community Day at Scott Park. These are pictures from some our past Community Day booths.

We are seeking gently used, colorful “springesque” clothing, handbags, jewelry, and so on to sell to bargain hunters.  So we need contributions to that effort and we will need volunteers at the May 5 Community Day.  We hope to have campaign lit, signs (if available).  We will register voters, have Restoration of Rights information available, and so on.

Other dates on the horizon …

The General Assembly will be called into special session on April 11, primarily to deal with the budget.  A large aspect of the budget impasse from the regular session is the expansion of Medicaid.  All Virginians have a stake in this, not only those who might be able to have access to medical coverage.  The budget affects all of us.

April 18 is Veto Day, the day on which the General Assembly, comes back into session to deal with, if it can, vetoes from Governor Northam.

Plan to attend our business meeting on April 5 and learn more about what is going on in the political arena and in our community.

Katherine’s handouts:

first a caveat … the author’s scanner is inserting a blank page between each document. Apologies will try to get that fixed shortly.  There are only three pages of real documents.

2017 Democratic Primary, Justin Fairfax, Lashrecse Aird, politics, Ralph Northam, Rebecca Colaw

Congratulations to all of the candidates

Every Democrat who offered himself or herself as a candidate for the Democratic nomination is due respect from all of us.  We have no anointed or hereditary leaders. Diverse views and experience is what will continue to massage our party’s message and keep our efforts in tune with the needs of our citizens.

Congratulations to the statewide and local primary winners.

Ralph Northam and Justin Fairfax are our nominees for Governor and Lieutenant Governor, respectively.  Mark Herring, our Attorney General, did not have a challenger in the primary.

As to the Virginia House District races affecting Prince George:

In the 62nd Sheila Bynum-Coleman was ultimately unchallenged.  She will be facing long-term Republican incumbent, Riley Ingram, in November.

The 63rd Virginia House District was handily captured by our current delegate in that district, Lashrecse Aird.  Her victory was decisive.

After Primary Victory

In the 64th, with three Democratic candidates, Rebecca S. Colaw, won the Democratic nomination.  Here race in November will be against another woman, Republican Emily Brewer.

Congratulations and thank you to our poll workers

Many voters had questions, particularly in the race for Lieutenant Governor, because that race had not received the attention of the Governor’s primary.   Many voters wanted the opinions of those of us who are actively engaged in the political process and knowledgeable about the qualifications and positions of the candidates.  Poll workers, you made a difference.  Thank you!

Prince George County Virginia SealTwo Board of Supervisor and two School Board seats will be on the ballot in the November 2017 general election.  There will be one of each elected from District 1 and District 2. These offices are in addition to state elections, including the gubernatorial election.  More about state elections will be published shortly.

If you are interested in running as a candidate for one of those local government seats, this Local Candidate Bulletin will spell out the required documents, costs, if any, and filing deadlines.

Reeve Ashcraft has already announced publically that he will not run for school board re-election from district 2 and it is assumed that Bill Robertson will run for re-election for the District 2 Board of Supervisor seat.  Bill Robertson identifies as a Republican and school board members run as non-partisan, though Reeve Ashcraft identifies as a Republican.

The Board dealt with the issue of the the vacant District 2 seat for only about 30 minutes at its March 9 Budget Work Session.  The three nominees named last night were Bill Elliott, Marlene Waymack, and Sheila Minor. Note the absence of Reid Foster as a nominee.  If the Board cannot find a compromise candidate or that third vote cannot be found for Waymack or Minor then the Chief Judge of the Circuit Court will make the decision.  None of the 13 contenders are out of it yet.

There is a regular Board of Supervisors meeting tonight. Work session begins at 6 p.m. County Admin Building, third floor.

Yes, Personal Property Tax Rate Raised BY BOS

Bill Robertson, current-events, government, personal property tax, politics

Prince George County Virginia SealExplaining that there was a $330,000+ shortfall in the proposed budget, the Prince George Board of Supervisors voted  4-1 to raise the personal property tax rate from $4.00 to $4.25 which would virtually negate the shortfall.

Bill Robertson, District 2 Supervisor and the lone dissenting vote,  argued that the County should tighten its belt and not put heavier tax burdens on its citizens, when many have lost their jobs and the price of gasoline has risen so dramatically.

Robertson also referred to other revenue increases the BOS is considering in the future such as a 1% Home Fuel Tax and a different method for valuing personal property.  None of the other members responded to this comment.

Perhaps the action taken last night will save good County employees from being laid off and on this we will have to wait and see.  The state has not finalized its budget, so the County really doesn’t know what will receive from Richmond and the Prince George School Board is likely to seek additional funds from the County depending on how much is received from the state.

Aside …The Dozier rezoning request was denied.  The parcel in question was near West Quaker Road at Route 460.  Traffic safety and neighborhood protection were cited as the main reasons for denying the application.  No one except the applicant’s attorney talked at all about the wastewater capacity or lack of it.  The vote again was 4-1 with Robertson, being the dissenter.  More about this later.  We may want to talk about what “neighborhood” means and who are members of the “neighborhood.”

Chester, Crosspointe, current-events, Delegate Dance, Democrats, Harrison's Salon, Le'one Lee, Petersburg, Petersburg Battlefield, politics, President Obama, President Taft, Prince George Virginia, River's Bend, Rolls-Royce, Ruby Evans

Carol Woodward:  “I’m a Democrat.”  President Obama:  “That’s good.  We need all the Democrats we can get.”

Such was the exchange in the photo line with President Obama after I had told him my name.

Was I a hick or what?

I had begun my preparations for the POTUS visit by having my mani-pedi the day before at Classy Nails in Chester (River’s Bend area), and  scheduling an 8:00 a.m. before-hours hair styling at Harrison’s Salon in Petersburg for which he would not accept payment.

Then I raced over to the Crosspointe Business Park wanting to be terribly early should there be any snafus.  I arrived by 8:45 and the only snafu was which parking lot I should be in.  The authorities were in conflict on the topic so I quietly opted for the paved parking area outside the front door of the facility rather than the muddy outlying lot from which the audience would be shuttled in by bus.  Difficult choice.

I got my ticket as soon as the VIP tent opened and was directed to the line to be used by those who would be in the “clutch.”  I think that means those selected to be in the photo lines with the President.  Three times I was asked my name by the same young man to verify that my name was on the list.

I waited in line about an hour-ish during which it rained a little, sleeted a little and blew a little.  Thankfully, Harrison’s Armourall hairspray protected my hair with a little help from my jacket hood.

After being wanded I was led by my young name-asking man to my seating area and given instructions to rise immediately after the President’s speech and follow him to my area for my photo line.

We waited about two and a half hours from that point during which time the size of the audience swelled.  Delegate Dance, Ruby Evans and Le’one Lee took a lot of pictures of me and introduced me to a heck of a lot of people, including actress and producer, Daphe Maxwell Reid.

Then someone placed the Presidential Seal on the podium and all knew the President was on the premises.  He was.  Governor McDonnell had met him at the airport, along with many dignataries, including Congressman Bobby Scott who had been helpful in supplying extra tickets for the Prince George Democratic Committee.

I had raised the question previously on facebook whether a sitting President had ever visited Prince George, Virginia.  The CEO of Rolls Royce North America answered that question in his introduction speech referring to a 1909 visit to Prince George by President Taft.

Upon doing a little more reading I learned that Taft had visited Prince George for the dedication of the Pennsylvania Monument at the Petersburg Battlefield.  It was the Pennsylvania miners who had dug the tunnel which  breached the Confederate lines.  The Battle of the Crater was the result during which poorly trained Union soldiers  ran into the Crater rather than around it and, unable to climb out, were picked off by the Confederate soldiers.

The Governor (Ultrasound Bob) and Congressman Scott were warmly greeted and then at some point … there HE was, bounding in as “Hail to the Chief” was played.  I had seen him in person in Emporia, Virginia in the fall and I was seated just as far away now as I had been standing then, but I knew I was going to meet him later.  Oh, what would I say?

The President spoke about innovative manufacturing and collaboration between manufacturers and institutions of higher education such as had been established between Rolls Royce and venerable Virginia universities and community colleges.  Many fidgeted when he kept referring to being in Petersburg and referencing Petersburg landmarks and leaders.  I was not concerned.  Frankly, it would do us all good to be a little less parochial in these climes.

Fortunately, the White House published the text of the speech later.  I heard very little of it.  I was concentrating on not saying anything stupid when I had my chance to shake his hand.
