62nd VA House District, 8th VA House District, Greg Habeeb, PG DEMS meet August 2, Richmond Times-Dispatch, Riley Ingram, Sheila Bynum-Coleman

8th VA House District to have a special election:

According to the Richmond Times-Dispatch, Saturday, July 28th, “Republican Habeeb to leave Va. House” (A2),  on August 31st.  This will necessitate a special election. The 62nd Virginia House District is a hugely red district which includes Salem, Craig County, and parts of Roanoke and Montgomery counties. Yes, it would be a tough haul for a Democratic candidate, but we all know that thanks to the current resident of the White House, there are cracks opening up in many solid red districts.

Riley Ingram to not run for re-election?

The last paragraph of the same article noted that Riley Ingram had indicated to the RTD

cropped-sheila-bynum-coleman-in-hopewell.jpg

Sheila Bynum-Coleman

that he will not run for re-election in 2019. Sheila Bynum-Coleman took well over 40% of the vote in her last run against Riley. Has anyone talked with her? Is she planning on running a third time?  The third time is a charm and it is time for the 62nd Virginia House District to vote blue!

The link for the article referred may not work for you depending on whether you subscribe to the RTD or where you are in relation to its paywall. Go buy a copy, better yet subscribe to either physical delivery of the RTD or to its digital access.

Prince George Dems meet next on Thursday, August 2.

Looks like we’ll have lots to talk about. We meet at the Prince George Human Service Building, 6450 Administration Drive, 1st Floor meeting room, Prince George Government Complex at 6 p.m.

Attorney General, Delegate Lashrecse Aird, Floyd Brown Jr, Governor, Justin Fairfax, Leila Holmes, Lieutenant Governor, Mark Herring, Ralph Northam, Rebecca S. Colaw, Registration Deadline 10-16, Sheila Bynum-Coleman

As a Democratic Party member and advocate, it is our duty to educate ourselves and others about issues and candidates.  Other than voting, this is our primary responsibility.  If we don’t accept the responsibility to do this, then we should not blame others for our ignorance.

The election is in 30 days!

Today, October 8th, marks the one-month milestone before citizens go to the polls on November 7th.  Before then …

October 16th is the deadline to register to vote in the November 7th election.  Already registered? Double check your registration for correctness at your county registrar’s office or by going online at www.elections.virginia.gov.  This is especially important if you have moved or had a name change since the last election.  The Prince George County Registrar’s office is on the Second Floor, South Wing, of the County Administration Building.

October 21, 5:00 pm is the deadline to request an absentee ballot to be mailed to you. A request by mail must be received by 5 pm that day.

November 4, 5:00 pm is the last day to vote absentee in person.

The election in Prince George:

The Democratic nominees for the statewide offices are:

Governor:  Ralph Northam, currently the Lieutenant Governor.  He is a physician and Gulf War veteran.  Ralph is a native Virginian, having been born and raised on the Eastern Shore.

Lieutenant Governor:  Justin Fairfax, is a lawyer, former prosecuting attorney, and now a Justin Fairfax speaking in Hopewelldefense attorney in Northern Virginia.  This young man and his three siblings were raised by a single mother.  All four went to college and two went to law school.  Justin’s law degree is from Columbia University where he was on the Law Review.

Attorney General:  Mark Herring is currently the Attorney General.  He has fought for women’s reproductive health rights, expansion of Medicaid, challenged the Trump Immigrant Travel Ban, and many other efforts to protect the rights of Virginia citizens.

Virginia House Districts in Prince George:

62nd: Sheila Bynum-Coleman is challenging Riley Ingram, who has held the seat for Sheila Bynum-Coleman in Hopewellalmost 3 decades.  She garnered about 40% of the vote in the last race and has continued her quest to become the Delegate from the 62nd because she is someone who will listen to and fight for the right of citizens.

63rd: Delegate Lashrecse Aird is the incumbent and is unopposed Delegate Lashrecse Aird in Hopewellin this election.  She faced a challenge in the primary and had the opportunity to speak to citizens in the 63rd and throughout our area. She continues to be active in reaching out to citizens and organizations throughout the 63rd and the Crater area.

Rebecca Colaw64th:  Rebecca S. Colaw is the Democratic nominee for this seat which has no incumbent.  Rebecca is a Gulf War Air Force veteran herself and is currently an attorney in Suffolk.  She is very interested in workforce development and the expansion of broadband throughout the 63rd.  Being a horsewoman she is also particularly interested in the agricultural challenges in the district.

Democrats in the local Prince George Races:

FJ in Rotary ShirtBoard of Supervisors, District 1:  Floyd Brown, Jr. is the candidate in this district.  He is uniquely qualified having been born and raised in the district.  “FJ” is a business owner and IT professional and understands the challenges to our Prince George,  as both a rural community, as well as a close neighbor to the urban development to the northwest of Prince George.  F.J is the Treasurer of the Prince George Democratic Committee.

Leila HolmesSchool Board, District 2:  Leila Holmes, a member of the Prince George Democratic Committee, is the candidate for this seat.  She has been an active parent and citizen volunteer in the school system and has made it a practice to attend and comment at the school board meetings.  She will advocate for transparency and fairness in our schools and will advocate for the best educational opportunities for all of our students.

All of the candidates have web pages and most have presences on Facebook and Twitter.  The easiest way to find their presence online is simply to google a name and go from there.

Early this week we will load the sample ballots for each Prince George Precinct on the Documents page and we will continue to update the events page.  If you learn of a political event we should publish, please share that information with Carol Woodward.

It’s time to get the buzz on …

Enough excuses already!  Sure you have all said

  1. I’m tired of politics
  2. I don’t like politics
  3. It is summer
  4. It is summer
  5. It is summer
  6. Wait til after Labor Day
  7. My vote doesn’t count
  8. There is nothing I can do
  9. I have to wash my hair
  10. All of the above

Every election matters …

From dog catcher to Presidential every elected official in some way affects the everyday lives of everyday people.

This year we are electing the Governor (Ralph Northam), Lieutenant Governor (Justin Fairfax) and Attorney General (Mark Herring) … all in statewide races.

Every House of Delegate (HOD) member is up for election.  In Prince George we have

Senator McClellan Delegate Aird Congressman McEachin
After Primary Victory

three HOD districts:  The 62nd has the Democratic nominee Sheila Bynum-Coleman challenging a 30+ year Republican incumbent.  In the 63rd Democratic incumbent, Lashrecse Aird, is unopposed, but she still needs to hear from her constituents and needs their support.  The Democratic Nominee for the 64th HOD district is Rebecca S. Colaw, a 20 year Air Force Veteran who deployed in wartime and now a practicing attorney and horsewoman.  Rebecca is running against a Republican newcomer who owns a wine shop. There is no incumbent.   It is clear from the demographics that both Shelia and Rebecca can handily win their districts … if we do our part!

We also have a number of local elections for the staggered terms in District 1 & 2 for the

Leila Holmes

School Board and the Board of Supervisors.  Two of our Committee members are running for local seats … Floyd Brown, Jr. is running for the Board of Supervisors in District 1 and Leila Holmes is running for the District 2 School Board Seat.  We also have a special election for the County Treasurer, a Constitutional Officer position.  This is to fill the unexpired term of the retiring Treasurer, Jean Barker.

Challenges for rural campaigns:

Sheila Bynum-Coleman

Sheila-Bynum Coleman

Sheila Bynum-Coleman, the Democratic candidate for the 62nd Virginia House District, shared some of the strategies she is learning from the Rural Caucus of the Democratic Party of Virginia (DPVA) and other organizations, about how to campaign effectively in rural or exurban districts.  Needless to say, religious communities can play a major role in this effort, directly or indirectly, congregations are fertile sources of voters and campaign volunteers.  How best to reach them?  Providing literature and speaking when allowed are terribly important musts for a campaign.

Rebecca S. Colaw, the Suffolk lawyer who is the Democratic candidate for the 64th Virginia House District, was on her way to the meeting when she was stalled by a massive traffic jam in a more populous area of the district.  The 64th covers about 80% of Prince George County in terms of territory and voters.  We tend to forget about the 64th because the current Republican incumbent did not make himself available to Democratic constituents.  Though we are on the northern fringe of the 64th, Prince George represents the second largest voting locality in the 64th.  Rebecca reported by phone that she and volunteers are planning on knocking on Prince George doors in late July.  She is also using Facebook extensively and asks that we like her page and share it with our friends and other pages.

At this point, Delegate Lashrecse Aird  (63rd Virginia House District) is unopposed, but she still needs the support of those in her district to continue her work on behalf of our Tri-Cities area.  She and Delegate Price (95th) are hosting a webinar on July 12th at 6:30 pm to discuss new laws which went into effect on July 1.  You must rsvp to attend the webinar at www.tinyurl.com/AirdPriceWebinar.

Also in attendance were Floyd Brown, Jr. (“FJ”), candidate for District 1 Board of Supervisors, and Leila Holmes, Candidate for District 2, Prince George School Board.

Remember that all of our candidates need our support … donations, knocking on doors, sharing Facebook messages, texting, and or calling others on their behalf.

Carol Woodward is available to answer any questions about the recent meeting of the 4th Congressional District Committee on June 17.  It was a great first meeting of the reorganized 4th CDC.  We had a great time and were entirely inspired by Lieutenant Governor Ralph Northam, his recent primary opponent Tom Perriello, Senator Mark Warner, and our own 4th CD Congressman, Donald McEachin.

Some upcoming events to get on our calendar:

August 4 & 5 – Community event at Union Branch Baptist Church, Prince George

August 19 – Community Day in Hopewell

August 24 – Back to School Fair, Scott Park, Prince George

We may be able to have a booth at each of these events to register voters, sell our candles, and assist our candidates.

Prince George Dems welcome candidates

If you haven’t heard the word “hustings” it has usually meant, in America, any event where candidates make campaign speeches.  It has older meanings in German and in English having to do with a hustings being a deliberative assembly or a special court, but here in the ole USA it means when politicians put it all out there, in front of each other, as they make their pitches to the voters.

The Prince George Dems meeting on April 5th, had very much that feeling.  Among the guests were Leila Holmes, running for the School Board from District 2 and  Evelina Davis, who is considering a run for the School Board from District 1.

from left Sheila Bynum-Coleman, PG Dems Chair Cynthia Mitchell, and Jerry Cantrell

Jerry Cantrell, one of three Democratic candidates for nomination to run for the 64th Virginia House of Delegates district presented at the meeting though his Democratic opponents were not present.  Both John Wandling and Rebecca S. Colaw have visited the committee before though not on the same occasion.

Tavorise Marks with Cynthia 2Both Democratic candidates for the 62nd Virginia House of Delegates district spoke. Sheila Bynum-Coleman and Tavorise Marks are the two contenders.  Bynum-Coleman was the Democratic candidate in the last election and took 40 something percent of the vote.  Marks has run before in 62nd primaries and brings military experience to his desire to serve.

Matt Handsfield, Regional Field Organizer for the Ralph Northam campaign for Governor, spoke on behalf of his campaign.  Northam is the current Lieutenant Governor.  His Primary challenger is Tom Perriello, a former U.S. Congressman.

The candidates had only two to three minutes to introduce themselves, so didn’t have much time to explain their platforms.  They were all able to stay after the meeting and connect with the members and guests present.  A local committee must remain neutral through a Primary, but individual committee members may support and endorse any candidates of their choice.

All of these candidates have facebook pages and websites so look them up and learn more about what they propose and how you can donate and volunteer.

More will follow shortly about upcoming important deadlines, caucuses, and conventions.  Ah, it is political season again …

62nd VA House District, 63rd VA House District, 64th VA House District, Jerry Alexander Cantrell, John Wandling, June 13 Primary, Lashrecse Aird, Rebecca S. Colaw, Sheila Bynum-Coleman, Tavorise K. Marks

Multiple democratic primary candidates for Virginia House Districts in Prince George.

This House of Delegates Candidates Bulletin from www.elections.virginia.gov explains the filing windows for the June 13 primary and November 7 general election candidates for the House of Delegates.  Last week we published the Bulletin for Local Candidates.

Tavorise K. Marks and Shelia Bynum-Colman will be competing for the Democratic nomination for the 62nd House District.  This is the district now held by Republican Riley Ingram. The 62nd has a very small footprint in Prince George but voters in the 62nd would be primarily in parts of the  Rives and  Jefferson Park Districts.

As of this morning, we do not know if anyone will be running against Delegate Lashrecse Aird of the 63rd House District.

There are three Democratic Candidates as of this time for the 64th House District currently held by Republican Rick Morris.  Rebecca S. Colaw is a lawyer and military veteran and will be at our meeting on March 2.  John Wandling is an IT professional and small business owner and attended our meeting last month. Jerry Alexander Cantrell, an academic, is the third Democratic contender.  We might note that Rick Morris is being challenged by two other Republican candidates.

The names of the contenders were taken from the listing in www.vpap.org . It is a moving train.

Eligibility to vote in June 13 primary

The last day to register to vote in the June 13 primary is May 22 if not already a registered voter.  Not sure?  Check with the Prince George Registrar on the second floor of the County Administration Building or at 804-722-8748.  Don’t guess.  Double check.

A note of caution

A Local Democratic Committee may not take a position in support of a possible democratic candidate until that person has won in the June 13 primary.  An individual may, of course, support the person of his or her choice, but there will be no Committee endorsements or campaign contributions for primary candidates.

Politics is alive and well in Prince George County

Democratic candidates and candidates for nomination headlined the Agenda of the PG Dems on April 2nd in the 1st Floor Community Room of the Human Services Building.

Sheila Bynum-Coleman, candidate for the 62nd Virginia House District, spoke about the precinct by precinct analysis her campaign and the Chesterfield Democratic Committee has done which indicates that the 62nd is definitely winnable.  Riley Ingram, the Republican incumbent has held the seat for two decades and Democrats know it is time for a change. At this point Bynum-Coleman does not have a challenger in the Democratic Primary. Below Bynum-Coleman (r) speaks with Sharon Goertz, Prince George Dem and Electoral Board member.

Three of the contenders for the 63rd Virginia House District in the June 9 Democratic Primary also spoke.  Gerry Rawlinson, Lashrecse Aird, and Atiba Muse briefly focused on their backgrounds and how their experience qualified them for this post.  Rawlinson has a background in nursing and as a business owner, Aird has experience as a political committee leader, legislative aide to then Delegate Rosalyn Dance and her gubernatorial appointments to state commissions by Governor McAuliffe, and  Muse cited his constituent and legislative assistant experience with Congressman Bobby Scott and his experience as an elected School Board member as unique qualifiers for the position as a state Delegate. The Democratic incumbent, Joe Preston, is a candidate for the Democratic Nomination for the 16th Virginia Senate District.
