Politics is alive and well in Prince George County

Democratic candidates and candidates for nomination headlined the Agenda of the PG Dems on April 2nd in the 1st Floor Community Room of the Human Services Building.

Sheila Bynum-Coleman, candidate for the 62nd Virginia House District, spoke about the precinct by precinct analysis her campaign and the Chesterfield Democratic Committee has done which indicates that the 62nd is definitely winnable.  Riley Ingram, the Republican incumbent has held the seat for two decades and Democrats know it is time for a change. At this point Bynum-Coleman does not have a challenger in the Democratic Primary. Below Bynum-Coleman (r) speaks with Sharon Goertz, Prince George Dem and Electoral Board member.

Three of the contenders for the 63rd Virginia House District in the June 9 Democratic Primary also spoke.  Gerry Rawlinson, Lashrecse Aird, and Atiba Muse briefly focused on their backgrounds and how their experience qualified them for this post.  Rawlinson has a background in nursing and as a business owner, Aird has experience as a political committee leader, legislative aide to then Delegate Rosalyn Dance and her gubernatorial appointments to state commissions by Governor McAuliffe, and  Muse cited his constituent and legislative assistant experience with Congressman Bobby Scott and his experience as an elected School Board member as unique qualifiers for the position as a state Delegate. The Democratic incumbent, Joe Preston, is a candidate for the Democratic Nomination for the 16th Virginia Senate District.

Schapiro’s headline that the stakes are low doesn’t strike true with this Prince Georgian. True Prince George doesn’t have much presence in the 16th VA Senate District (about 7 or 8%), but that seat has a profound influence on the County.  Read Schaprio’s column and draw your own conclusions.

See you at the PG Dems meeting on Thursday, April 2 at 5:30 p.m. in the PG Social Services Building (1st Floor), 6450 Administration Drive, Prince George Government Complex, BLDG #12.   We now have a request from Atiba Muse, candidate for nomination in the 63rd VA House District to be on the Agenda.  The Chair, Cynthia Mitchell, will designate a time limit for candidates on the Agenda to speak.

The Democrats Without Borders (DWOB) was founded in 2011 and is a strategy and communication team comprised of the chairs of the tri-cities area local chairs (Chesterfield, Colonial Heights, Dinwiddie, Hopewell, Petersburg, and Prince George).

DWOB was awarded the Innovation Award by the Democratic Party of Virginia at the annual Jefferson Jackson Day meeting on June 29, 2013. Hopewell Chair Bettie Washington was selected by DWOB to represent the team and to meet Vice-President Joe Biden at the JJ Banquet.

The DWOB meets weekly by conference call to plan coordinated upcoming events, political activities, and to discuss local committee challenges. It also sponsors an open Facebook group of the same name to broaden the exchange of ideas among Democrats regardless of their location. DWOB operates by consensus, has structured calling schedules and agendas, and engages the state party and the political campaigns as appropriate.

The founding and current chairs are Bernie Vogelgesang (Chesterfield), Jeff Blaha (Colonial Heights), Ruby Evans (Dinwiddie), Bettie Washington (Hopewell), Brian Moore (Petersburg), and Carol Dois Woodward (Prince George).

Delegate Rosalyn Dance of the 63rd Virginia House District has been the team’s advisor and supporter and is frequently invited to update the team on legislative, political and community matters,

POTUS Is Coming to Prince George Virginia

@vademocrats, Obama, OFA, Organizing for America, POTUS, President, Prince George, Virginia

Democratic Party of Virginia

Friday, March 9, President Obama will speak at the Rolls Royce Facility in Prince George County, Virginia.  Needless to say, everyone is excited, if for different reasons.  Law enforcement will be relieved when the day is over and POTUS is off to his next destination.  County officials are scrambling with their share of duties in this rural county of 37,000 people.

As far as scrambling goes, purported Democrats are calling and emailing hourly wanting “tickets” to the speech.  As Chair of the Prince George Democratic Committee, I just wonder where some of these “Democrats” have been … not at our meetings …not working our polls …not doing any phone banking, canvassing or even cheering us on.

But, perhaps they really will turn out to be more Democrats in the County than one would have ever guessed.  Being a Democrat in Prince George is like being an atheist …most are in the closet.

After some trolling for “tickets”  Prince George should have about 24 or 25 real Democratic Members at the event and the surrounding Local Committees may have similar numbers.  Don Mark of OFA of Virginia and Congressman Bobby Scott, VA 3rd CD have been especially helpful in helping have some Democrats at the visit.  Otherwise the President would have been speaking to a crowd of Republicans.

Now, mind, some of the Republicans are friends of mine, but we can’t talk politics very much.   We even socialize in public and are most polite to each other.  There is trouble on election days when outside Republican agitators are brought in from less genteel realms, but at least they go home when the polls close.

And me … I got word from Don Mark that I would represent my committee in the photo line with the President.  Oh, I wish I had lost those extra pounds, but off for my mani-pedi today and my hair dresser is opening his shop two hours early in the morning to style my hair before I go meet my President.

Don’t let me say anything stupid.

@vademocrats, Prince George VA, training, vademocrats.org

All those who know me know that I hate meetings.  Why is it I spend so much of my life in meetings?

The Democratic Party of Virginia (DPVA, @vademocrats on twitter and www.vademocrats.org) held trainings for local committees this last weekend and for once the two days of training and the Central Committee Meeting provided so much information in such a directed and useable format that for once I wasn’t meeting fatigued.

Next meeting I will get my entire executive committee plus others there.

For reference … in the next couple of days you will see a calendar of upcoming events, e.g., delegate caucuses to the state convention and to the congressional districts.  Delegate selection to the Democratic Natinal Convention in Charlotte will also be held at the State Convention.

Until then sign up for the Prince George for Obama House Party on Thursday, February 16 at 5:30 at 14356 Warwick Hills Drive, Petersburg VA (Prince George County).  Party includes a dial in to Michelle Obama’s Conference Call.  Check Democrats Without Borders and Prince George Virginia Democratic Committee Pages on FaceBook for the signup link.  Don’t live in Prince George …no problem … signup and meet some Prnce George Women Xenas in support of Obama.

Whew!
